TRIFLES . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 May 1877

TRIFLES . E . M . yft , —Ahthenai Society . God in his infinite wisdom knows no trifles . It is thoughtless man that exclaims It is nothing , it is but a trifle . God follows to the end and sees in everything the majesty of greatness . Man stops at the beginning , and calls it a trifle . He looks merely at the little cause and sees not the large result , forgetting that a correct judgment of causes arises onl y from a correct judgment of effects . Ri ghtfully speaking then there are no trifles . Every dc : d , every word , every thought ,- —our very looks are mighty in influence , leaving deep and lasting impressions upon the tablet of human life . The eye of man is a silent commander . The savage beast quails before the piercing glance . Guilt hides itself in downcast eyes when probed by the searching gaze of truth . It was only the look of Christ that smote the rocky heart of Peter , and repentant tears gushed forth . What si-, lent , forcible power in a look ! And thought , how g...

CAPITAL IN AGRICULTURE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 May 1877

CAPITAL IN AGRICULTURE . BY R . A . The object of all business is profit . As it is to that end that capital is used it becomes of the utmost interest to manage it well . To do this the manager must understand all the laws under which capital acts iii his special department of industry . In manufactures the great principle in the economy of capital , is that every increase of production is made at a proportionally diminished cost . In agriculture the direct opposite is the case . All increase of production is made at a cost proportionally greater . Thus if a mill weave one thousand yards per day at a cost of sixty cents per yard , by weaving five thousand yards the cost would decrease , perhaps to fifty cents . While if twenty bushels of wheat per acre costs sixty cents per bushel ; the cost at thirty bushels per acre would increase , perhaps to eighty cents . Any further increase of production would accordingly soon equal or exceed its value . Consequently farmers will invest their...

UTOPIA OF AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS- [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 May 1877

UTOPIA OF AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS- BY R . D . F . —Philoniathean Society . Institutions are the life blood of a nation . As the health and beauty of the individual depends upon the purity of the blood that courses through the veins , so must these institutions be pure in order to give vigor and strength to the government from which they eminate . They are what steam is to the locomotive , the impelling force , the power that , drives humanity onward and upward , that forces the drive-wheel of human progress . For their preservation what terrible conflicts have taken place , growing fiercer , grander as humanity has been elevated into manhood , into the pure atmosphere of reason . Rapid has been the growth of american institutions . The first emigrants brought with them the germ of this growth in the ideas which have taken shape in the constitution . Freedom of speech , ac- tion ar . d worshi p were the great princi ples for which they contended . These persecuted ideas found in the ii...

- ^ BBI ^ FQBI ^ IA *' - [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 May 1877

- ^ BBI ^ FQBI ^ IA * - Owing to the . pecularities of the political side of our institution , we are obliged to take up the quill from the table where our worthy forerunner had left it , when he jumped from the stool to take the better cushioned seat , in which all notable presidents of our government had before sat . Here we arc , to carry along , if possible , the ILLINI in its old successful course , and to bring no deserved reproof upon it , through the remainder of this year . Though not used to this new field , we hope by the kindly aid of fellow students to make the ILLINI what it ought to be , a true index of our institution s work , a just delineator of its character . We hope to still keep the pages filled with the writings of students , whom we ask to not forget the interests of our college paper , but to give it their assistance ; to make it a pleasant thing to have about , whether here or away . Students , it is your duty to help your paper . The ILLINI should not be w...

SCIENCE NOTES . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 May 1877

SCIENCE NOTES . Photographing the spec rum of a star : —The difficult feat of securing a photographic impression of the spectrum of a star has been successfully accomplished by Professor Henry Draper , of New York , to whom , as will be remembered , a gold medal was awarded by congres in recognition of his eminent services in connection with the employment of photographic proscesses in the recent observations of the transit of Venus . In a communication just published he gives an account of some experiments upon the spectra of the stars , and planets , and the moon , and especially at the stars a Lyme and a Aquilac , with a twenty-eight inch reflector and a twelve inch refractor . The photographic spectrum of the former of these stars shows broad bands and lines in the violet and ultra-violet portion quite unlike anything in the corresponding regions of the solar spectrum . He had also succeeded in obtaining two photographs of the spectrum of Venus which exhib it a great number ot l...

OUR EXCHANGES . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 May 1877

OUR EXCHANGES . The Alumni Journal is . We agree with the J \ iagara Index that others should imitate the New Tork World and give us a little of interesting college news . That . piece of poetry in the Alabama University Magazine , on the brightness of the world , ought to be salted down for future reference . It s so chawmina :. The question of p hysical exercise is considered , by the Obcrlin Review , in a fine essay , and in a kindly reminder of a $ 3 60 debt . The Berkeley an , if puny , is not so because it is a Western sheet . Perhaps Eastern colleges have not made sufficient study of the Western yet . The Packer Quartcly , though it comes but once in three months , is full of intercot . CHARLES DICKENS- [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 May 1877

CHARLES DICKENS- I . V I \ The true object of the novel is to portray human life ; to so picture the mivery of ils miseries , the p leasure of its joys , the intermingling of the noble with the low and base , tile pure and true with the false , that , viewing the picture , we may feel the right and true rising within us , and overwhelming the wrong ; that we may he truer to ouiselvcs , truer to humanity—truer to humanitysGod . Charles Dickens has thus p ictured humanity . No touch is want-. ing to complete the p ictures . Every stroke is from the hand of a master . One fact has helped him in this delineation : he wrote with a fixed end in view ; e \ erv novel lias been written for some definite end . Dickens was a philanthropist , but . not one of the milk and water kind . His was a strong and healthy nature , loving hut n ^ ver verging upon sickly scntiinenlalism . Suffering nii . st be mitigated , but justice must prevail—though men suffer . I ie wastes no tears over crime in puni...
