AGRICDLTDRAL . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 13 June 1868

AGRICDLTDRAL . The BaokwaxdneM of Corn Planting . The oldest Inhabitant has been often questioned lately tb order to find out , within the range of his memory , whether a season so unfavorable for corn planting has occurred , and his answer is uniformly in the negative . Farmers inquire anxiously ; about whats best to be done under the circumstances . « To plant / or not to plantthat ; W . tKe q & esr-, tlon . The _ lbtbi-tl \ : _ nj » n . viwit _ i _ tlii _^ laji lion In tbe way—there is no , use in planting : for it will not ripen before the frost , but the lndustrloua , persevering farmer who knows the lndespensable nature of the corn crop , will plant at all hazards , and will very probably succeed in raising a good crop . The advantage of plowing sod-land for ; com in the Fall • and laying it in ridges or lands , so that the surface water will be carried off by the furrows , was never more apparent than now . Land managed in this way is so dry that the corn has been...

HORTICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 13 June 1868

HORTICULTURAL Are Beei Injurious to Pruitf A correspondent of the Maine Farmer says that a neighbor of his being convinced that bees were injurious to apple trees by gathering their food from the blossoms , killed bis bees last Fall . I * is probable that there was some other cause for the failure of his apples , as bees and insects of various kinds areknown to increase the frultftilness of the blossoms by mixing and distributing the pollen for fecundation . Some time ago we noticed a letter from a grape grower in Australia in which he stated the Italian or Ligurian bees are very destructive to vineyards as they puncture the nectaries of the blossoms . This statement Is worthy the attention of fruit growers ; a little observation will decide whether It Is correct or not . In the orchard houses about Philadelphia and other places where peach trees are very successfully grown ln tubs and large pots , a hive of bees ls put Into the house when the trees are in blossom , and they find ab...

§ mtttk <& ttmmi MlteA tar » Pnstleal HHMkupti Economy in ______ . ! .. Economy ln labor IS just as necessary as economy pecuniarily . Many a back-ache , much weariness ; much Impatience , might ¦ . be saved by this same economy In labor . . For instance , we ask one of our children to feed the chickens ; he obeys , and re- . _ turns to his play . In a few minutes we ask him . to bring ln some wood ; again he obeys , and again returns to his play ; but a few minutes more and he is called to perform . some other errand . This time he obeys very reluctantly , perhaps says something like dont want to , or shant . Would lt not • have been economy for us to have had hirit do all those errands at once , _ rid saved him many steps and both our tempers ? So in the household work . LETTERS , INttVIRIES , ANSWERS , Etc . Notes from Nebrask » . —Wo are again ln receipt of THI WKSTEDR RU » AL , and . are glad as oftenas it comes to hand . The information and numerous Hints we gather from its perusal arc worth tons many times the price of the paper . . What do we think ot Nebraska after a residence here of a few months ! We have as yet experienced nothing of the fierce winds and extreme cold of which we had heard . On the contrary , the Winter was the mildest we have ever seen either tn New England or the West . The weather has been , for the most part , delightful . Spring opened earlier than we bad ever known it eliowhere , and tbe soil being quick , our gardens have come forward with surprising results , so tbat now ( tho 1 st of June ) we are feasted on green pea . grown ln the garden . As for the grasshopper , we think the danger is mostly over , and begin to conclude that the general harvest will be fully an average yield . — £ . P ., Larimer , Neb . , Sprin...
