AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 6 May 1880

AGRICULTURAL HOW TO TREAT STABLE MANURE . Before answering Subscriber s query directly , I wish to say that our method of handling stable manure has for its object , chiefly , to keep the manure pile constantly wet , and thus prevent Are ianging , and solid , to check fermentation . C . P . B . is quite right in intimating that the dryness of our climate is the great obstacle to the manufacture of manure in this section . Our barn yard is situated on a slight slope , and all the drainage of the hill side is conveyed by ditches around the yard . We have found by experience that the rainfall upon the barn yard , if it can be all retained , is , with the liquid voidings of the animals , about the quantity of the moisture needed to keep the manure pile constantly moist . To retain the moisture properly the barn-yard bottom is made slightly concave to prevent any overflow of its contents . Occasionally this does happen , but only during or after very heavy rains . Into this concavity , o...

ENTOMOLOGICAL . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 6 May 1880

ENTOMOLOGICAL . THE EUROPEAN CABBAGE WORM . Fig . 1 .-MALE EUROPEANIJ , CABBAGE-BUT-TERFLV . The use of cabbage has grown to such an extent in our country that it may now be considered one of the necessary articles of food : Jjence any thing that has a tendency to injure it , retard its growth or lessen its yield , is worthy of our attention . Until recently it suffered in our State comparatively little in a general sense from the attacks of insect enemies ; the little striped fleabeetle { Hattica vittata ) , which riddles the leaves of the very young plants , being , perhaps , its most serious insect foe . Here and there , in the vicinity of our larger cities , tlie cabbage patches of vegetable gardeners occasionally suffered somewhat severely from the attacks of other BpecieB , but this was local and not general . But the advent of the European cabbage butterfly ( Pieris rapae ) , as we have witnessed in the past two years , has very materially changed the aspect in this respect I...

THE APIARY . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 6 May 1880

THE APIARY . TREATMENT OF THE NEW SWARM . It is most important that swarms should be as strong as possible . If they happen to issue , as is often the case , two or three swarms in the same day , it would bo better to unite two or more of them together , certainly the weakest . The union is easily effected as follows : First , hive each swarm in separate skeps ; this done , and when the bees are quiet , dash them out together in a heap on the ground by a smart blow on each hive . Set near then the hive which they are to occupy for them to creep into it , and as soon as settled put them in placeofone ofthe old hives out of which either of the swarms issued . If by chance there should be any signs of quarreling , sprinkle the mass of struggling bees with a little sugared water or thin sirup . If only one weak swarm has to be dealt with , it were better to return it at once to the hive out of which it came . Do this as soon as possible after you have caught it . A simple plan is to spr...
