You have asked me to write you something for the Who s Who in Berkshires ., Well I just dont know what qualifies a Who is Who . It looks as though every man who owns a gooa Berkshire sow that produces him a litter of good pigs , twice a year , is Wjho is Who about now . Judging from the transfers made and the great accumulation of work in the secretarys office at Springfield , there are a great many Who is Whoes in The Berkshire World . I have cut but little figure in the Who is Who . The first registered Berkshire sow 1 ever bought wae at one of the overton Hall Farm sales . She was Lady Ruth of 0 . H . P . by Moreau Longfellow . I paid $ 225 for the sow and she was supposed to be with pig to the unbeaten Sensation 90900 . The Lament of the Pug-Nosed Hog . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 September 1910
The Lament of the Pug-Nosed Hog . The Berkshire World and Corn Belt Stockman . Mr . Editor : —I should like to get in the game just a little in the discussion of the Berkshire hog with regard to length of nose , and being a new man in the Berkshire business I would make my bow very modestly to the old breeders . I bought my first pedigreed Berkshire in 1900 from J . Harvey Scribner , of Moweaqua , 111 . The greater part of the intervening time I contented myself by crossing with the PolandChina , but finally launched out with full Wooded Berkshires . However I have not gotten very far from the shore line yet , and what I have to say may probably be considered as much from the standpoint of a hog raiser as a Berkshire breeder . Permit me to say in the start that I have not much love for the extraordinary short-nosed hog . With due respect to the originators and admirers of this short nose , and also the cry of many who say that we must conform to the score card which requires a short...

Dear Sir : —Being of that small class who believe in planting their flowers on the grave of the living , I want to congratulate you on the splendid magazine you are getting out , especially the July issue . It is a most splendid effort and you deserve the thanks of the fraternity for its valuable store house of knowledge to all breeders of Berkshires and dairy cattle . I have bought the best my money would buy for my foundation stock . Have an excellent young boar from J . W . Russwurm s Lee s Atrufl Premier 12 th , out of his Lady Ruth 1 th , which is developing into some hog as well as pedigree . Penshurst Berkshires [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 September 1910
Penshurst Berkshires Editor The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . The Berkshires at Penshurst are in fine condition . We have fitted for a few of the Eastern Fairs , what in my judgment is the best under year and under six months herd I ever showed . They are by Lee Premier , the Grand Champion sire of 1909 ; Artful Premier 7 th and Masterpiece . Lee Premier is the best sire of early maturing pigs of right type that I ever saw . He sires pigs with such wonderful width , depth and hams and with this they have fancy heads and plenty of bone ; I doubt if his equal as a sire lives . His get won over all competitors in 1909 . Wte expect some great litters in September , that will be heard from another year . The Junior Champion sow at the 1909 International is due to the Grand Champion , Star s Royal Masterpiece 2 d . Premier Linda , dam of first prize produce of sow at Connecticut , New York and the International , should give a great litter . Starlight Rubers 2 d , dam of the Grand...

EDITORIAL [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 September 1910
EDITORIAL Effect of Sale Averages . High averages made at public sales of Berkshires have certain effects which are not desirable , although unavoidable . One of them is to dissuade so-called small breeders as well as farmers or beginners from attending future vendues by the men who score the high figures . Many a seller will admit frankly that while it would be desirable to secure as large an attendance as possible of all classes of interested persons , the chief profit comes from a few leaders or buyers of the top lots . Where stock of the seller s own breeding Is sold this argument is sound , but where , as in many cases , the top offerings represent purchases by the seller the situation is different . It is time that we recognized the special adaptation of given men and communities to the breeding of hogs or other stock of a given class . For example ,, a farmer wishing to buy a moderate-priced boar should have some means of knowing that he could not secure him at a given breede...
Heart to Heart Talks With Our Advertisers [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 September 1910
Heart to Heart Talks With Our Advertisers HOW OFTEN SHOULD I ADVERTISE ? Surely a hard question to answer for the advertiser who has no past eperlences to guide him , and about all he can do is to look about him and see what others are doing and have done in the same line that he is in . The question to answer is so broad , and presents so many different phases , that we hesitate to lay down any law or rule that Is not likely to stand the critical examination that all such articles as this are sure io have . Last winter the writer was looking through the advertising pages in one of the current magazines and noticed an advertisement that was telling in a clear cut fashion , the advantages of a certain brand of porous underwear for summer use . Well the first impression the writer had was that this particular concern was stark crazy —advertising summer underwear in the dead of the winter . They have found that the time to advertise their product is all the year round . One reason why ...
