7 ML I As 8 tos-xoatto to. SATURDAY. JULY 27, 1895 POLITICAL PROSPEC1S. The Republicans of the country never more nearly united on national -issues than they are at present, and they will enter the campaign next year with the brightest hopes of sue rceSsrFcr over-thirty years Democracy has not been able to retain power : only a few years, when, by some ill ' advised - legislation contrary to its pledges the people have become dis appointed and given the reins of gov ernment to, Republicans. This was true in 1888, when Mr. Harrison was elected, and history will repeat itself in 1896. ' The platform of principles upon which Mr. Cleveland was elected in 1892, and the promises made during - that campaign, have all been violated by the Democrats. They have nothing on which they may hope to gain public favor, and the record they have made during the past three years has been destructive to American progress and "American industries. The elections during the past "year have fully de monstr...

As both of these are cor related with Russian and British power . in. the orient, or what iB "commonly ' called the Eastern question, the f ollow ing editorial in' the Inter Ocean of the ' 24th in regard to the political situation 'in Bulgaria will be of interest: Prime Minister Stoiloff, of Bulgaria, having failed to bring about cordial relations between-Russia and the Bul garian government, and fearing that " '. the tendency of the reactionary party is toward a line of action that will sur '.. render" the independence of Bulgaria " . or 'subordinate it to the plans of Russia, ha3 tendered his resignation. SATURDAY . AUGUST 10, 1895 SUNDAY LAWS. Sunday laws have been upheld by courts because they were sanitary measures, as it Is necessary for the well-being of the people that one seventh part of the time should be de voted to rest and recuperation. But such a decision would apply with equal force if the observance of Saturday were made obligatory as it does now regarding Sunday. If the validity of the law, or its constitutionality, rest on this sanitary feature any seventh day will answer the purpose. There may be some argument in making the - rest day as nearly universal as possible; but in forbidding all secular work law makers should be careful that they do not trample on the conscientious scruples of any religious denomination that consider another the holy day taught in the Bible. Those who have no veneration for religion should be made to have that respect for the feel ings . of their neighbors that any disturbance of the approved methods of worship would be punished as a misdem...

- SATURDAY r... v.. AUGUST 10, 1895 ". AX VXFAIR' 8YSTE1T. " I .. The people of this country have been .aroused, to action by the - press in regard to the gigantic trusts which ".have been formed, and it is stated that 'by combination they have managed to . keep the price of articles at a high fig ure. But there are evils extaut In this nation, other than the price of commodities, which call for. immediate ' relief. One of these " we find men ... tioned in the following excerpt from a New York paper: "It looks as if the profits of the bazaar magnates were not to be in creased much longer by the oppression . of tho work-girl. The outcry made by the 'merchants who founa-that the bazaars were stamping their lives out has arroused the armies of clerks in .the 'department 'stores' to a sense of ".. their own situation. SATURDAY AIJGUST 17, 1SD3 OLD ISSUES ARE LEAD. The Globe-Democrat, one of the lead ing' Republican papers in the we9t, be lieves in nominating the. next vice president from the south, as this would have the effect to unify the followers of the party in all portions of the country. At first blush it might seem impossible to secure a prominent Re- "publican, an available candidate for a national nomination, from the states that have been so long dominated by Democracy. But thirty years have passed since the surrender at Appoma tox, and almost everything that at tracted the south to the Democratic party has ceased to exist. Slavery is dead beyond the power of resurrec tion, state's rights is no longer an is- ' sue before the American people, and protection is as favorably considered in certain districts as at the ' north. There is no more reason that the people of the south should continue of the same political opinions as they were a quar ter of a century ago than that Boston : should...
