San Diego Unified Schools practice a zero-tolerance policy requiring the suspension and/ or recommendation for expulsion of secondary school students who violate rules regarding weapons, controlled substances and physical violence. “Walking or biking to the school for the student is always great because they get exercise and get to know their neighborhood a little bit better,” Brandais said.“ If they were to, heaven forbid, get lost or something like that they would know their way around the area.” While Brandais believes that walking or biking is good for students, he also believes that it depends on the parent’s comfort level. • Choose the safest route between home and school and practice it with children until they can demonstrate traffic safety awareness. • Teach children to obey the rules of the road. They should know that the same rules that apply to other vehicles apply to them as well. Bicycle riders should be on the right-hand side of the road and should travel in the same ...

Wenda Alvarez, president and CEO of the SDPF, cited a recent case where a motorcycle officer made a major identity theft bust from a minor traffic violation stop because he was able to use the device to tap into DMV data and noticed discrepancies in the suspect’s identification. Many of the officers with these new handhelds do not patrol in vehicles with mounted computer systems and otherwise would not have access to vital databases of information. More than 300 handheld communications devices have since been put in the hands of officers as a result of Qualcomm’s donation. At last year’s Beyond the Headlines event, Qualcomm donated $ 1 million towards communications and tracking equipment for police officers, the single largest donation the SDPF has ever received. Beyond the Headlines guests mingle with San Diego police officers, the mayor and local community and business leaders while learning about the foundation and the needs of local law enforcement that are not covered by the c...

“He’ll wail, he’ll really electrify the crowd,” DeBoskey said of Robillard.“ He has people on their feet from start to finish. Our goal was to keep people on their feet throughout the day, and this whole line-up is designed to do just that.” Other acclaimed artists slated to perform include Grammy Awardwinning congas player Pancho Sanchez, the Latin-themed Dave Pike Quartet with guitarists Mundell Lowe and blues artist Duke Robillard. The soulful jazz energy of piano and saxophone will resound all day at the Ocean Beach concert, which begins at noon with the locally based Jazz 88 All Stars and will run until about 7 p. m. Following the Jazz 88 All Stars, organist Joe Defrancesco will keep crowds swinging with his Hammond B-3 organ, a popular instrument in the 1960s that is now experiencing a revival. The goal of Jazz Week, according to KSDS station manager Mark DeBoskey, is“ to point out that jazz is a vital and important part of the culture of America and that it thrives in San Die...

The Buccaneers took the opportunity to flex their skills while making a statement — the Bucs are ready to take on allcomers. Mission Bay High brought their CIF football championship runnerup squad out to Patrick Henry High for a pre-season scrimmage Aug. 25 in San Carlos. “We had a lot of first-time guys on defense,” said head coach Willie Matson.“ We had just four starters returning on defense, but they played real well— they did a fine job.” The Buccaneers had a pre-game warning from the Patriots coach that they would be seeing a shotgun offense. In the opening minutes, the Bucs saw a very deceptive offense which included a quarterback and two halfbacks poised five yards back each time the ball was snapped. But the Patriots also tried to fool the Bucs with a nohuddle offense. “Patrick Henry was very physical, they made a good fight of it.” Matson said.“ We made some mis- In the opening minutes, the Bucs and Patriots swapped touchdowns on each possession.
