Banon adults only apartments to be considered A proposed ordinance banning adults-only apartments in the city of Los Angeles will be considered by the City Council on Tuesday, Jan. Is. The council was originally scheduled to consider the proposal, which would ban —age discrimination in rental housing, oh Jan. 9. It was postponed because of scheduling problems, according to Councilwoman Pat Russell, sponsor of the ordinance. The council will meet at 10 a.m. in room 340 of City Hall on that date.

Nava reported Carter choice as ambassador President Jimmy Carter has decided to appoint Dr. Julian Nava as the next US Ambassador to Mexico, according to reports from Washington sources. The so-far unconfirmed appointment would make Nava, former president of the Los Angeles School Board, one of the more prominent Hispanic leaders in the country. Nava left the board last year, and was a candidate for appointment as president of California State College at Lot Angeles. He did not receive the post, and Is now an administrator at Cal State Nortbridge. If named, Nava would replace former Gov. Patrick Lacey, who resigned the post to join the Edward Kennedy campaign. Nava would need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

Item pricing okayed by committee Tiie City Council’s intergovernmental relations committee Monday voted 2-1 for a motion by Councilwoman Peggy Stevenson calling for item pricing in LA supermarkets. Mrs. Stevenson’s motion would create a city law to make up for the fact that a state law ordering item pricing expired Dec. 31. The motion was supported in committee by the author and by Councilman Bob Ronka, with a “no” vote cast by Councilman Bob Farrell. Farrell, who represents Southcentral LA, said he was opposing the motion because of opposition from Ralphs Markets, a chain which he said has remained in the minority community and which is the most active market in pursuing new computer checkout methods. The state law, by Sen. David Roberti, was designed to prevent markets from having only computer marks on items which could be read by units at the checkout stand. Harrison School offers training for volunteers School volunteers, parents, and all interested persons may enroll in special training classes focusing on volunteer work with students in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Harrison School, 3529 City Terrace Dr., in East L.A. will host training class. How To Help the Child At School and At Home, for four sessions, beginning Jan. 8. Classes will meet 9:00-11:30 Tuesdays continuing through Jan. 29. The class will be conducted by volunteer trainer Carole l,cwis, and is co-sponsored by Garfield Community Adult School. Classes are scheduled in all areas of the district, according to Sarah A. Davis, director of the city schools’ Volunteer and Tutoria Programs. HUD rent refund deadline is near With the Jan. 31 deadline for filing claims for the HUD rent refund just weeks away, many qualified tenants may fail to file&gt; According to Patricia Tenoso of the Western Center on Law and Poverty, Inc. in Los Angeles and lead counsel in the nationwide class action suit, ‘‘Underwood v. Harris,” many of these tenants will not file because they have not been informed of the refund by their project managers. The rent refunds, which will average $5OO, are the result of the settlement of several lawsuits including ‘‘Underwood v. Harris" and “Dubose v. Harris” in which low-rent tenants of HUD Section 236 apartments sued HUD for failure to implement Congressionally mandated tax and utility subsidies during the 32-month period between Feb. 1. 1975, anOSept. 30, 1977. LA school security debated By Charles Cooper Three security agents currently employed by the Los Angeles School District told a committee Monday that serious crimes being committed at some school campuses are not being reported or dealt with because of attitudes of some administrators. The three spoke at the end of a meeting at which two school district officials told board members that they felt there were few if any problems with the way the district’s security program is now functioning.
