She. I. PAGE 4 THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES. SMITHVILLE. TEXAS 78957 THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 9. 1978 ELGIN Fleming Hospital Board president Mark Sheffield told the Times in an interview this week that the hospital is in the midst of a severe financial crisis. This crisis was contributed to by the long ill- ness and death of Dr. Morris, the hospital's guiding hand for many years. Mr. Sheffield said, "Money raised at the upcoming fundraising chili supper will all go toward pay- ing outstanding operating liahili ties; the hospital's debts are such that it will be impossible to use any of the proceeds of the dinner for new building or remodeling tosts." We asked Mr. Sheffield why the- money-raising effort couldn't be postponed until the time when the proposed new hospital was being built. He told us quite simply that the present hospital would close with- out these badly-needed funds. When asked what exactly was the disadvantage of letting Fleming close, if there is to be a new hospital soon any...

PAGE 1 Tigers Strangled, 70-54 by Robert Buscha The homestanding Smithville Tigers surren- dered four straight bask- ets to the Bastrop Bears and could not come back to overtake the quick and agile visitors. Results for the Bengals proved to be a 70-54 disaster. One could say it was a very cold night for the Tigers—not just outside the gym, but also inside. Smithville connected on only nine of 34 shots in the first half while falling behind 33-22. The first quarter was colored maroon and white, as John Roeber and James Warren led their team to a 21-10 ad- vantage. In the second period, though, the Tigers awoke and staged a short- lived comeback. After spotting the Bruins five more points, Willie Ray Deary hit four straight baskets on two jumpers and two layups. The Tig- ers trailed 26-18. Hopes of getting closer to Bas- trop were clouded, as the Bruins reeled off seven points. Finally Wade Medlin and Deary each hit a...
