et." These milestones included low CD4 levels and AIDS diagnosis. While coming out can reduce stress by no longer having to hide, it is important to note that this is not true for all people. In another recent study, researchers found that HIV progressed faster when people are in the closet — except if they were sensitive to rejection by strangers (which is called rejection sensitivity). Thus, while it is important to come out to family and friends to reduce stress, it can be counterproduc- tive for people who are sensitive to rejection when coming come out publicly. Minority Stress LGBT people have minority stress, which refers to the stress resulting from societal dis- crimination. Examples of this type stress include not receiving support for relationships, discrimi- u "Before it was scientifically established, not many people took "sharing your feel- ings" seriously. WHAT YOU CAN DO Paula Martinac has ideas about what you can do to recruit straight allies to the gay marriage cause INEVITABLE Paul Varnell on gay marriage, and why, whether 5 or 50 years away, it's a growing inevitability. es the women off with a smile or a quick-witted comeback. But she shouldn't have to. The gay and lesbian community needs people like Emily. We need straight women and men who not only support us politically but also min- gle with us socially who see beyond our sexual orientation to our true selves. In order to have a society where we are treated equally we need to not just fit in with straight people in straight soci- ety but accommodate straight people who fit in with us. What these women are doing to Emily isn't funny and it isn't right. It's predatory. Lesbians have long complained about men who try to turn us. Many of us have been in a situation where we've mentioned that we're lesbians only to be told something like this: "Well, have you been with a man?" or...

I ife+sty lefash i on TWO FASHIONISTAS ARE BETTER THAN ONE: Neale Jones, left, and Densii Adams are co- chairs for Dallas Collection 2004. DIFFA Dallas Collection celebrates 15 years with its most ambitious runway show By Daniel A. Kusner Life+Style Editor Volunteerism can rebuild communities in times of crisis and can help spread compassion throughout the world. Even George W. Bush urges each American to dedicate 4,000 hours (two years over the course of a lifetime) to serving their fel- low man. For the past 15 years, the Dallas chapter of the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) has mounted the Dallas Collection — a Texas-sized runway show where denim jackets are transformed into wildly imaginative works of art and then auctioned off to raise money for HIV-AIDS organizations. During the black-tie event, an intoxicating fashion-crazed vibe sails through the air. And each year, the snazzy cat- walk-show — featuring designs by luminaries like Kenneth Cole, Calvin Klein...

screen Lock, stocky 2 midnight cowboys What's so wrong about laughing at shamelessly offensive gay stereotypes? WE ONLY DO IT FOR THE MONEY: Stumbling onto a sure source of revenue — blowing and then pick-pocketing old guys at the local gay bar — straight bloke Byron (Brendan Mackey, right) talks Kenny (Glenn Mulhern) into doing the same. By Steve Warren Contributing Film Critic B When the word got out about "9 Dead Gay Guys" the word was "politically incorrect." It seemed like it would be used equally as a criti- cism and a selling point. You knows "Screw the PC Police. See this movie anyway." A lot worse movies have been sold that way. Maybe I just have a thick skin, but I didn't find "9 Dead Gay Guys" all that politically incorrect. The film, which will be screened as part of Fort Worth's Q Cinema program on Thursday, features some stereo- typical characters, but what movies don't? And this one tacks on a message that says sometimes stereotypes apply and sometimes they don't, whi...

tube Bi bi Bizet Transplanted to Senegal, 'Carmen' is back, and she sizzles In 'Karmen Gel' By Steve Warren Contributing Writer If a movie showed African Americans singing and dancing as much as the characters in "Karmen Gei," and filling the time between with drinking, card playing, screwing and drug smug- gling, it would be denounced for negative stereo- typing and would make a fortune at the box office. If that movie were as well made as "Karmen Gei" and had as charismatic a star as Djeinaba Diop Gai, its success would be deserved. Since "Karmen Gei" was filmed in Senegal and deals with Africans who speak and sing mostly in subtitled French, it escapes the P.C. Police but also fails to reach a wide American audience. If its main character weren't bisexual — giving it access to a niche audience of queers — it might not have been shown in the U.S. at all. Other than Karmen, the names have been changed from the familiar opera but most of the story's elements are here, with a few sig...

Niagara Ms The cynicism in 'Wonderfalls' feels rehashed, but there's room to improve By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer c+ Mysticism on television is big these days. On "Joan of Arcadia," a high school student gets reg- ular visits from God, telling her to go on elabo- rate kinds of scavenger hunts that invariably ben- efit others in "mysterious ways." HBO's "Carnivale" pits emissaries of good and evil in the 1930s Dustbowl, and charac- ters on recently cancelled pro- grams like "Touched by an Angel" and "Miracles" find sol- ace in spirituality. From this backdrop, "Wonderfalls," which debuts this week on Fox, exudes a slight "been there, done that" vibe. Where it tries to distinguish itself is with its weirdly fantastical imagery (talking animal statuary, for instance) and snarky attitude. Although obviously still a work in progress, it has the potential to blossom into something hip and funny — if only the writers take it in the right directions. Wonderfalls is the name of a Niaga...

Couples who try performing these exercises should use extreme caution. Lunging or squatting with someone sitting on your shoulders, as in "Be Me Camel: The Weighted Lunge" or "Master of the Stairs: The Weighted Stair Climb," can be dangerous for both parties. That being said, for intimate couples following Goicolea and Arruda's technique, part of the challenge is completing a workout without becoming aroused and jumping in the sack. In the foreword, editor David Leddick (famous for compiling scintillating photos of male nudes) salutes the buff co-authors. "Fooling around never gets better than this," Leddick writes. And that may be the more appropriate way to digest "Fit Together" — an alternative guide for stimu- lating and health-conscious foreplay. While "Fit Together" may have some short- comings as a serious fitness guide, Glen Mitchell's gorgeous photography is simply out- standing. The images in this tastefully designed and beautifully printed book captures both a clas- sic h...

BODACIOUS BABES OF R&B It's been 15 years since the release of Queen Latifah's hit single "Ladies First." At the time, the song was iittle more than a typ cal hip-hop boast, and women had precious lit- tle clout in the music biz. But what a differ- ence those 15 years has made. There's no denying that women are the powerhouses in today's music. Pianist Alicia Keyes has released a pair of albums that have jumpstart- ed the neo-soul movement. Missy Elliott is cur- rently one of the most respected hip-hop artists and producers, and she's in the process of producing her own reality TV series^ Biggest of all is Houston-born goddess Beyonce Knowles, star of stage, screen and Superbowls, who at 22, is one of the most recognizable faces in music today. Though organizers have called the Verizon Ladies First Tour a Lilith Fair for the urban set, they're really selling them- selves short there. Lilith Fair was never better than marginally mainstream — this tour is all about star power. — G...

life+styledining House of the rising sushi Sapporo, Oak Lawn's newest Asian eatery, soars with freshness and style n Great sushi thrives on fresh seafood, and the fish at Sapporo — including the shrimp, squid, tuna and roe —fit the bill. By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer Too often, ethnic-food restaurants shy away from being one thing. They like to hedge their bets, offering multiple cuisines under one banner: Pan-Asian rather than just Vietnamese! Mediterranean instead of straight Greek; Mexican-Latin American when Honduran alone would be great. When I find a true specialty restaurant, one that sticks to its basic mission, I embrace it. You can't really call Sushi Sapporo fusion cooking, but neither is it traditional to the point of stagnation. The new Oak Lawn eatery carefully infuses a hint of American influence on its con- temporary Japanese fare without betraying its roots. The tempura, for instance, includes the expected ingredients (giant shrimp, onion, yam), but throws in a...

sports rappling with it Gay wrestlers hit the matt and heat things up PERFECT MATCH: Ron Ward, left, a Gay Games medalist, and Antonio Quirante, a former state champion, both of Los Angeles, spar at a San Francisco Golden Gate Club tournament in 2002. Freestyle wrestling — practiced at the Olympics, at Gay Games and most tournaments in America — has long been a refuge for athletes seeking a demanding winter sport. Yet, despite wrestling's sexy image and revealing singlets, relatively few wrestlers are openly gay. With 17 gay-inclusive clubs in North America, and more in Europe and Australia, wrestling in the GLBT community has enjoyed a growing reputation. But its ranks remain limited to a ded- icated few hundred among the thousands of adults who wrestle. Those who initially think of wrestling as an elevated form of playing are often surprised by the physical demands of the sport. "Many gay men associate wrestling with fore- play to a sexual encounter or think it will lead it there,...
