MondayOct.l4The BrandPage 6 I Have a Dream Neutral Corner: Martin Luther King had a dream of racial equality and justice. He expressed that dream in 1963 on the steps of the Lin- coln Memorial. The speech was called 'I Have a Dream.' That dream must never die and should stay fresh in our minds until it is truly realized. Like Martin Luther King I too have a dream actually many dreams. Although nowhere near the level of Martin Luther King's dream it is still a dream. I have a dream that Gerry Cooney will return to the ring and fight Michael Spinks. Get knocked out and finally realize that in order to become a cham- pion you must first pay your dues. I have a dream that in two to four years the Texas Rangers will be a legitimate contender in the American League West. This can come true if they break with their tradition and keep their talented ball players. I have a dream that either the Cleveland Cavaliers Denver Nuggets or the New York Knlcks will dethrone the "Big Three of the NBA'...

Wednesday Oct.23The BrandPage 2 Letter from the editor BBBsBSBBBisBBBBMflBMIfl Hello againl Sorry the paper came out late thia week but due to circumstances beyond our control we were unable to finish the paper on time. In other words we took our own sweet time. Besides we are planning a special edition Reata for Sing and Parents' Day Weekend November 1 & 2. It will be more of a features paper with less "hard" news. We will be doing stories on HSU students to help the parents see what their kids are doing at the Forty Acres. The picture to the left is simply for your enioyment and relaxation. I do not understand how all those ducks got to the Reflecting Pond but the two young women sitting there are HSU students Laurie Roberson and Stacey Phillips. Since I still have not received any "Letters to the Editor" I have to put something on this page. The Visual Arts Center story on the front page is part of our policy to answer commonly asked questions of students. Julie Oliver wrote ...

Gwen works one night a week as a volunteer in the Pediatrics Unit of Hendrick Hospital in Abilene. The Pediatrics Unit treats children of all ages who are suffering various ailments. It may be tonsilectomy or it may be broken bones but whatever causes the doctor to prescribe hospitalization for a child also causes the child to adjust to a strange new world. "Some of these children have never been in a hospital before and they may not really know what's going on" Gwen said. WednesdayOct.23The BrandPage 4 HSU vies for finals The Hardin-Simmons Cowgirl volleyball team is one week away from the district playoffs. Their next three matches will determine whether or not HSU will be represented in those playoffs. On Friday rbctober 11 HSU played the University of Texas at El Paso. The Cowgirls lost 12-153-15and6-15. HSU played its best game of the match to start out the contest but after losing the close game they seem to lose enthusiasm for game two and three. One of the main reasons UTEP was stronger was that they had virtually all their players back from last year. UTEP won the NAIA Division I Conference last year. The following day HSU took on Tarleton State. The Cowgirls were victorious with the scores of 15-12 14-16 15-6 and 15-2. On Monday October 14 HSU played the University of Texas at San Antonio. The Cowgirls went down in defeat in the best of three match 12-15 and 12-15. In both games HSU was down five points and managed to com- eback which was a ...

WWWH V "" 4tk ' j BB?" si Whenever something seems to be getting easier and going smoother that is when you should be the most alert for something to go wrong. That is the lesson of the week for the newspaper staff at least it was for me. I knew I should not have been so relaxed about it earlier this week and the past weekend. I thought I had everything under control but right now it is 5:30 p.m. and the printer expects the paper at 7:00 tonight. I know he just laughs with his buddies every time I call him up and tell him that we will be a lit- tle late this week. The printer's name is Louis Ashford and I thank him for his infinite patience with a college boy. I recently attended a rape seminar that was organized by Patsy Stephenson and Linda Carleton. Sure laugh it up guys but it was so informative it was scary. My numbers are sketchy but approx- imately 20 out of 123 sexual assaults cases in Abilene last year in- vol...

Thursday Nov. 14 1985The BrandPage 4 soccerends Intramural Volleyball play on sour note The HSU Cowboys ended their season on a sour note as they lost to the Centenary Gents 3-1 in TAAC playoff competition. The Gents jumped into the lead after Just ten minutes of play and never relinquished it. With the score 1-0 the Cowboys lost seniors Hue Menzies and Owen Chong to red cards for unsport- smanlike conduct. That left the Cowboys two men short and little hope for catching up to be able to stay in the conference playoffs. The Gents scored once more to take a 2-0 lead going into the se- cond half. Somehow even playing two men short the Cowboys manag ed to push Centenary's backs to their own goal. Then the referee who failed to help either side all day threw a Centenary player out of the game leaving them with only a one player advantage. Shortly after the ejection senior Mark Kegans converted a penalty kick to put the Cowboys into the game at 2-1 . HSU main tained pressure on the Gents...

TueodayNov.261985The BrandPage 2 Letter from the editor Want to talk about procrastination? That wai a rhetorical question. Anyway I think I have possibly done everything possible to avoid writing this letter. It is not that I do not enjoy writing rather it is just the fact that I have no idea what I am going to write. Even right now I do not know what I am going to type after this line. I'll think of something since I have to. I keep telling myself its my job. That is what they tell me whoever "they" are. This past week has been an excellent news week. So it has not really been a matter of no material to put on the page? rather it has been a mat- ter of getting that information down on paper. It used to be the whole picture of getting the paper done that depressed me but now it seems that the really big problems come from little details. Ironing out mistakes and what-have-ya takes a heck of a lot of time. I think you know what I mean. Back to the news. I believe this week's paper c...

TuesdayNov.261985The BrandPage 3 HSU Police serve students The HSU Police Department does more than just hand out parking tickets. The eight police officers who patrol the "Forty Acres" try to keep law and order amongst 2000 students. The university family that they protect may not realize the duties and responsibilities that are behind the badge. Safeguarding lives property and facilities of the university is a top priority with the officers. Among many other things the HSU police are willing to escort students upon request from the parking lot to a dorm or help itudents who have flat tires run out of gas or lock their keys In their car. Because prank calls are frightening or annoying the police department has an air horn for people to use to discourage callers. People can talk to the police if they need the horn. Tuesday Nov.261985The BrandPage 4 Women's basketball lose to open fall in a heart breaker fcjo The HSU Cowgirls opened their basketball season last Tues- day against Lubbock Christian College and last Friday they played Shreiner College. Against LCC the Cowgirls lost 78-69. Against Shreiner College the Cowgirls lost a heart breaker 53-52. In the LCC game the Chap- parels started to pull away in the closing minutes of the first half. The halftlme score was 48-33. They were lead by Nettie Gilbreath who seemed to be a female Michael Jordan. In the second half the Cowgirls started to make a comeback. They closed the gap to a five point LCC lead. It seemed as soon as the lead was cut to five the Cowgirls Just could not get enough strength to take the lead. The biggest problem the Cowgirls had in this game was the turnovers. HSU made 19 tur- novers in the first 20 minutes. And although LCC's shooting percentage was not too im- pressive they took many more shots than the Cowgirls. Everybod...

mBmsm Friday Feb. 14 1986The BrandPage 2 Letter from the editor Dear Readers I know its been a long time since there has been a newspaper for school but after staying up all night to finish this one I could wait until Christmas to put out another one. While I'm typing this col- umn the cows have already come home and done left again. I don't know if any of you have ever seen the campus at 4 or 5 o'clock in the morning. If you think its dead during the day its the proverbial "day after" and not a creature is stirring not even the HSU Police. And radio. They still play the same ten songs in the wee hours that they do during the day. I guess they figure it doesn't matter. I have tried to figure out why it has been so hard to get the paper cranked up this semester. The only theory I can come up with is the same reason a person would not shoot a gun in an avalanche area. If we do one paper then everyone expects another. Oh well somebody's got to do it. I have also managed to not get orga...
