PROFESSOR PROFILE Mason and Jacobs two friends of different breeds The differences In both men are evident even from physical appearance. Dr Mason is rarely seen without suit and tie and Dr. Jacobs might not be recognized without cardigan sweater and open collar. Still both men are well known on the HSU campus for their unusual teaching methods and their contributions to an already highly accredited history department. Dr. Zane Allen Mason and Dr. Kenneth Jacobs are two close friends who have added to the lives of their students and each other for many years. Dr. Mason Is a well dressed gentleman who although in his early sixties gives the impression of one who places no limitations on age. Instead with age comes a greater understanding and a wider capacity for age jokes for which is infamous. He has a long list of degrees past experience in teaching and ad- ministrative positions and memberships in honor and professional societies. Among his accomplishments Mason has published five...

The Excursion a short story by frank heesley Quarzite pebbles leaped and danced in the dust and cigarette ashes on the floor of the Model-A Ford as It bounced along the dirt track crossing the summer pasture. To Jason Summers it seemed a merry dance. He sat in the back seat immersed in tobacco smoke from his father's and grandpa's hand-rolled cigaret- tes listening to their voices above the chunk-chunk-chunk of the engine. "Hope Sailor Creek's still running after all this dry weather" his father was saying. "Prob'ly will be" Grandpa replied. "Springs should keep it runnin'." Jason soaked up every word. Each syllable each ordinary event carried a special significance to Jason because this was his first men-only fishing trip. He raised up looking over the back of the seat that couldn't quite contain his grandpa's broad shoulders at the Crosshatch of deep lines in the old man's neck. Bending forward he peered between the seats. His grandpa's hands gripped the steering wheel with the sa...

ies of a small bop m MM thin layer of moisture coated the chill metal seat In the prow. He was glad for the warmth of the keroslne lantern mounted behind him but the swarm of bugs it at- tracted frequently drove him away He wondered why his grandpa seated on the boat's rear seat didn't seem bothered by bugs attracted to the lantern mounted there. He watched his father's glowing cigarette pointed toward the near bank where the lanterns cast eerie shadows as the boat glided by. His father's and grandpa's oars dipping softly in the vlscuous water kept the boat gliding quietly upstream. The chrrr of cicadas and the chirup of crickets filled the dark punc- tuated by the occasional bass grump of a bull frog. Again Jason felt as though he was intruding. There was a conspiratorial tone to his grandpa's voice when he said "Here it Is coming up." Jason clung to the sound. He looked at the bank but only saw roots black earth and water. The boat veered suddenly the prow carry Jason toward mid-r...

Sports Unlimited fastbreak jimmy pogue Parent's Day gives me a chance to reflect on my life to this point and all the happy times our family has shared. My parents are the ones who Instilled my love of sports inside of me. I'll never forget my mother teaching me to hit a baseball by pitching to me until I kept my eye on the ball con- sistently. I was in my first year of Little League and hadn't got a hit all season. My dad had gone to a fire conference and mon pitched to me in the backyard for hours teaching me to hit. In our last game of the season I made contact twice and at that point in my life I had never felt so proud. I'll never forget the endless hours of catch I've played with my dad. Even now when I'm home after supper we get out the gloves and play catch. I won't forget the ruptured blood vessels and crutches he received when he put up a basketball goal in the backyard. I Parents motivate kids in sports don't ever recall any complaints about the backyard being beat up due...

Sports Unlimited Roundballers set to roll (from page 16) The Associated Press reported and Coach Danford confirmed the fact that the Trans-America Athletic Conference was indeed going to experiment with the three-point shot this year. The distance in which they will be ex- perimenting with will be 19 feet 9 inches from the basket out around the perimeter. This is somewhere between the ACC's joke that is inside the top of the key and the NBA's joke that Is too far away to tell if the ball went in if you were to shoot at it. This rule will only be in effect for conference games. Coach Danford said that the Pokes will use this shot as part of their offensive attack this year. Coach Danford is very excited with the way the team shapes up this year. He said they have some much needed depth at guard from having one true guard to five. Hayes and Gates bring desparately needed height to the post position. All six of the signees are con- sidered to be outstanding offensive players. This shou...

CONTENTS Ss&fJR4 A holiday of remembrance by .Nancy Hendricks Thanksgiving Is a highly anticipated holiday for most people. Visions of succulent turkey with dressing and homemade pumpkin pie and mounds of whipped cream flash across the mind. These culinary delights are just a small part of the large mass of the food one stuffs himself with on Turkey Day. In fact for many Thanksgiving Day is synonomous with "massive pig out day." Average Americans do feel obligated to say theyare thankfulfor something but many still put more of their efforts into watching football and eating resting and eating talking and eating and then just plain eating. This isn't because few actually realize how blessed he is and how important it is to be thankful but rather sheer laziness or lack of gratefulness. Being grateful for material possessions is strongly emphasized this time of year. Unfortunately many people forget to be thankful for the people in their lives. Everyone has a tendency to take famil...

Columns letters UWW-W. - Dear Editor Seeing Hardin-Simmons referred to as a "Christian" university because the movie Psycho was presented Halloween night really made me angry. Putting Christian in quotes John Ausmus seems to think the spiritual virtue of the entire university is in doubt because of the showing of one movie. As Chris- tians we must be" careful at pointing the condemning finger. Christian universities quick to point this finger tend to fall behind in the academic world because they severely inhibit the study of the sciences world literature and the BIBLE (everyone knows objective criticizing is sinful). Hardin-Simmons is a growing dynamic university on her way to becoming a major component in the academic world. In his letter Mr. Ausmus stated: "Fear Is not one of the fruits of the spirit (Galations 5:22 23) it is the way Satan attacks our saved mind." This fear is a dangerous thing indeed; for who is going to decide what is Christian and what isn't. The only way to d...

The Picnic a short story by frank beesley The sun of the sand deepened the frown on Doug Brewster's pimple-plagued teen-age brow as he clambered out of the car parked beside the Highway 368 bridge. Doug did not want to be there. Marvin Doug's eleven-year-old brother already had half his clothes off. Under his jeans he wore a maroon swim suit that continually threatened to drop from his hipless body to his skinny ankles. "C'mon Doug" Marvin yelled. "Let's swim over to the rocks and do some divin'." Doug shoved his hands deep into his pockets and stared at the water. Running over the gravel and rocks in the shallows beneath the bridge the water sparkled and jumped in direct contrast to Doug's mood. "Douglas." It was his mother's soft voice. We're going down to the bend. Help Dad- dy carry the rods and tackle boxes. Marvin! Come back here and help carry the picnic things." Doug hated the way she called his father "Daddy" when she was talking to him or Marvin. He moped his way to the re...

REVIEWS All The Right Moves gives Cruise a chance to shine Tom Cruise displays his exceptional talent in his role as Stef Georgevich in the film All The Right Moves. Cruise and his attractive co-star Lea Thomp- son portray compassionate high schoolers in a dilapidated Pennsylvania mill town. Acting and characterization prove strong enough to carry the movie however the plot is weak and very predictable. All The Right Moves another "Cinderella" story finds Cruise as a poor millworkers son trying to escape the poverty of Amplpe Penn- sylvania. Cruise's character feels his best means of escape is through a football scholarship to a "good" college to study engineering. To do this he must excell in the "big game" against the rich Walnut Grove High School. Traumas plague the protagonist but all are neatly resolved in the end. Although the plot Is simplistic the film provides for good depth of character. Cruise is able to shine with a strong cast to support him. Craig T. Nelson as his coac...

On Furlough Loves mi ssionary residents at HSU by David Love For the seventh consecutive year Hardin- Simmons University is sponsoring a mis- sionary in residence and this year's mis- sionaries the Charles P. Loves like others before them will work through the Religious Activities Office. Tom McMillian and his family served as the first missionaries in residence during the '77-'78 school year. "Missionaries that apply for the position usually have family ties" said Palmer McCown Head of Religious Ac- tivities. The Loves both attended HSU while Charles graduated from HSU in 1957. In ad- dition Mrs. Love's parents had been at HSU and four of the Love's five children have at- tended the university. This is the second time the Loves have served as missionaries in residence at HSU. During the '78-79 school year the Loves held that position and were the second fami- ly in the school's history to do so. i ' TOMJMM I I H Texas lifestyle has ups and downs for uprooted Californian Coming from California I was In for quite a change when I moved to the "Bible Belt" to go to college. Many of the changes were good. The Southern Baptist church I grew up in was in the midst of a secular world. Now one may say the churches in Abilene are in a secular world and in- deed this is so. But in comparison to the one or two Southern Baptist churches in the whole county where I grew up there are over thirty Southern Baptist churches in Abilene alone! Back home a person was seen as strange if attended church! "You're going where? To church? What the heck for?" I remember being teased by some of the neighborhood kids for going to church. Once after coming home from church my dad sent me to the store to get some milk for our Sunday dinner. On my walk to the store I remember meeting a bunch of my friends Matt and Mark Bauchman "Tiger" and Joey Figuera. They were all in there cut-offs eating candy leaning...

(D(D)1UJ1MM Christians become too concerned with appearances Praise the Lordl I'm so glad that you've decided to give your life to Jesus Christ. Now that you've become a Christian there are certain things that you can and cannot do. These things are rules and regulations that you must agree to live by if you are to call yourself a Christian. First the long hair has got to go; it must be trimmed above your collar. Your face must be clean shaven and your glasses must be kept clean. Of course girls are not to wear make-up and punk hair styles on girls is forbid- den. As to the type of clothes that Chris- tians are to wear on Sunday mornings it is requested that guys wear three piece suits and girls are to wear the best dress in their closets. On Sunday and Wednesday nights you can dress a little more casual. Guys can wear kod shirts and corduroy pants and girls can wear dress slacks and a nice blouse.
