THE KALGOORLIE MINER PUBLISHED DAILY. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1895. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 24 September 1895

THE KALGOORLIE MINER PUBLISHED DAILY. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1895. The lion and the lamb shall lie down in peace together, but not until the milennium arrives or the lamb is inside the lion. This is the only answer possible to the accusation of attempt- ing to stir up strife between Kalgoor- lie and Coolgardie, made against this journal by the sheet which masquerades as a local organ, but is owned and printed in Coolgardie. We have no dislike for the arrogant residents of the town which claims to be the centre of influence and wealth on the goldfields. The slight grounds on which the over- boomed township was founded have crumbled to dust now the only divi- dend paying mine within miles of it — Bayley's Reward — is no longer on the list, and we are really sorry the old centre has not had better luck. Still, as the only newspaper printed on the East Coolgardie Goldfield, we must protest, in the interests of Kalgoorlie and the other Eastern centres, against the encroachments of their ...

I. J. K. CQHN IN COURT. HE ALLEGES IT IS BLACK MAIL. .Perth, Sept. 23.   At the local court on Saturday, Mr I. J. K. Cohn, Mayor of Southern Cross, was sued by Florence Thackrey, a nurse, who claimed £30 14s on ac- count of 18 weeks nursing for a young woman who was brought to her by defendant. The doctor advised her to take the young woman over to the other side, and she took her away accordingly. She was absent from the   colony 18 weeks, and an operation was performed at Melbourne. CABLES.   MISS VANDERBILT ENGAGED. FIRE AT BORDEAU WINE EXHIBITION. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN WINE SUCCESSFUL. DREADFUL RAILWAY ACCI- DENT IN SAXONY. London, Sept. 22. Lieutenant Parry, the American ex- plorer, and the remainder of his party were brought back in the steamer Halk. Last year they reached Newfoundland, and are now on the return journey from a search at the North Pole. All the members of the party are well. A marriage is arranged between the Duke of Marlborough and Miss Van- derbilt, daughter of Mr Win Vander- bilt, the millionaire. The Duke is 24. A great fire has occurred at the International Wine Exhibition at Bor- deaux. The cause was an explosion of a gas engine. The conflagration has proved not so far-reaching as at first supposed. The electric pavilion was wholly destroyed, though strenuous efforts were put forth to combat the outbreak. The fire is now thoroughly under control. In the wines exhibi- tion the South Australian Govern- ment Wine Depot was awarded...

He intends to break the journey at Albany, arriving at Melbourne on Tuesday. He will go   from Perth to New Zealand, thence to London on November 30th. THE JAPANESE AND CHINESE. RUSSIA OCCUPIES PORT ARTHUR. LORD BRASSEY AT CAPE TOWN. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 24 September 1895

THE JAPANESE AND CHINESE. RUSSIA OCCUPIES PORT   ARTHUR. LORD BRASSEY AT CAPE TOWN. Reports state that the possession of Lian Long Peninsula has been yielded up by the Japanese to China. This is said to have been caused by Russia, who as a reward for securing the territory to China is to have the privilege of raising for China a loan of £20,000,000. The Vienna Free Press publishes what it describes to be a reliable tele- gram from St. Petersburg, stating that Russia with the approval of China, has occupied Port Arthur, which has figured so prominently in the late war. Port Arthur is situated at the southern extremity of the Peninsula and stretches southward between the Gulf of Pechili, the Corean Bay, and the Yellow Sea. While at Cape Town Lord Brassey and suite were guests of the Governor of the colony, who gave a ball in their   honor at Government House to them and to Victorian residents in the capital.
