RECOLLECTIONS OF EARLY MELBOURNE Possibly some of your readers may take an interest in the following few reminiscences which occur to my mind when this colony was known as Port Phillip, and having been a resident since the year 1840 I write from per- sonal knowledge and without reference to any historical periodicals. Federation seems to be a topic on which every individual, more or less, has made himself thoroughly up-to-   date within the last few months and, to mind, it is a pity that some of our far-seeing statesmen had not moved in the matter some thirty years ago when it was known that the colonies pos- sessed such wonderful resources. Governed by a Federal Parliament, with the most able men from the various colonies legislating for the commonwealth, it would have been impossible for the mushroom banking institutions to have sprung into exist- ence; or that the people would have been misled into the land boom panic, which has so retarded the progress of Victoria. ...
