THE CZAR'S MOVEMENTS. FAST MOTOR-BOAT SENT TO ST. PETERSBURG. ' By special arrangement with tlie Rus sian Embassy, a well-known London company is despatching a motor-boat to St. Petersburg. The boat, with engines of 120 h.p. and the best accommodation which her speed and limited size will permit, will stand by the palace, and her commander has orders to do anything that may be ex ? pedlent should it bo necessary for the Czar to leave. The boat is simply to be used to cir cumvent any attempts that may be made at Interference with his Majesty's liberty. She carries but little In the way of armament, the great desideratum of speed having been paramount In the minds of those entrusted with her out fitting. She will maintain a thirty-five knot speed for twenty hours at a stretch, and is built so that In almost the light est of seas her decks are awash, only the' smallest of conning towers project ing to indicate her existence to possible enemies.— 'Dally Mill.' UNSAFE CHURCH TOWER. [Newspaper Article] — Mullumbimby Star — 10 February 1906

UNSAFE CHURCH TOWER. The hoary tower of St. Giles, Crip plegate, B.C., a church famous as tho burial-place of John Milton and the sccne of tho wedding of Oliver Cromwell, is paying the penalty of great ago. It is in an unsafa condi tdon. Some years ago the outer walls of the old tower wore covered wdth stones known as Kentish rag. When tho full peal of twelve bolls are rung the tower vibrates to such an extent that 3ome of these stones fall to the ground, to the danger of passers-by. A scheme is now under consideration for re-facing the tower with blocks of Portland stone. In the meantime or ders havo been issued that until tho repairs are effected the bells shall not be rung when the churchyard la open to tho public. The church was built in the reign oi Henry VIII. on the foundations of a much older building. It was one of the few City churches which escaped destruct ion by the Great Fire, but the flames from surrounding houses c racked the windows and melted tho lead on the roof. ...

BED LOCKS. FEMININE PRESENTS. [Newspaper Article] — Mullumbimby Star — 10 February 1906

BED LOCKS. JTEMININE PRESENTS. In a more romantic age the lady who wished to recognise an admirer's atten tions bestowed' on him at t.lv; Christmas season a trinket or some other delicate mark of.her regard- iTj.'s being the era of utilitarianism, she gives him a pair of bed socks, a hot-water bottle, a set of waistcoat buttons, or something else of an eminently useful nature. This season a very personal note has been struck, which tends to prove that tho wholesale invasion of the British aristocracy by Americans is resulting in that good-fellowship between the sexes which is the feature of life in the United States. Last Christmas 'a few daring girls sent their male hosts such things as bed socks. This season a great many women have ordered elaborate hot-water bottles, with the screw-tops made of silver and monogrammed, to send to their men friends. They are accompanied, as a rule, by a pair of bed socks — or 'Slumber Slippers,' as they are poetically' known, with ini tials exqulsi...

No title [Newspaper Article] — Mullumbimby Star — 10 February 1906

A matter requiring the urgent at tention of the Roads Department is -the necessity for some moro substan tial guard railing on the bridge over Mullumbimby Creek, near the junc tion of tho Lismoro and Mullum bimby Crook roads. At .present there is nothing whatever to prevent a person being precipitated into the creek should a horse become restive or bolt on the bridge. The only means of keeping the traffic on the bridge is a doubie line of plain wire stretched along oitlier side, which is far too primitive to avort an accident. Probably when some awful catas trophe occurs, resulting in tho loss of life, tho authorities will be aroused to a sonso of duty, and have the mattor remedied. i # # Another matter that should bo attrnded to is a guard fcnco along, portion of tho Brunswick Road be yond King's Crook. At this particu lar spot tlio doviation runs, along a vory precipitous hill for four or five chains, and is a great source of dan gor to vehicular traffic, of which there is a good ...

WHAT IS MEDOC? A DELICATE QUESTION. [Newspaper Article] — Mullumbimby Star — 10 February 1906

.WHAT IS MEDOC? A DELICATE QUESTION. The Paris correspondent of the London 'Dally News' wrote on November 16th: A curious debate arose in the French Chamber this afternoon in connection | with an English firm of wine merchants who had a branch at Bordeaux and their headquarters in London. Acordlng to M. Ballande, a member fcr the Bordeaux district, the English firm had circularised its English cus tomers Informing them that by reason of an agreement come to with the Governor-General of Algiers with the view of developing the wine export trade of the colony, the firm was in a position to sell claret or Medoc wine at excep tional prices which defied all competi tion. Tho Bordeaux Chamber, of Com merce had protested against the circular on the ground that Algerian wine was not Bordeaux of Medoc. The Minister of Commerce stated that the English firm had acted Incorrectly in stating that nearly the whole of the Algerian wine was exported to Bor deaux and afterwards sold In England as . M...
