The Observer. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH. "Nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice." [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 6 November 1860

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH.   "Nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice."   The right thinking portion of the community must commend us for not allowing the proceedings at the National School on Friday to pass unnoticed. It is not a matter that may be passed over in silence, as it has brought to the surface an amount of meanness, baseness, and cunning, on the part of some of our soi disant philanthropists, that merits the most severe condemnation of every person having the slightest regard for morality or religion. Hie subject has been invested with a degree of importance—which it would not otherwise have possessed—by Mr. SHAW, the pseudo proprietor of a petit penny-whistle in this township, through which he occasionally blows the efferves- cence of his morbid vanity, or the over- flowing of his impure animal propen- sities. We would not soil our columns by mentioning the existence of such a   mouthpiece, were it not that Mr. SHAW, in the ind...

THREE YEARS ON THE GOLDFIELDS OF VICTORIA. CHAPTER II. The [?]—Ciri[?]ty—Accommodation. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 6 November 1860

THREE YEARS ON THE GOLD- FIELDS OF VICTORIA. BY JACK JONES. CHAPTER II. 7*.fiM-CirUitif -Accommodation. Here was a dilemma. There was no help for it, I thought, so I set off in quest of a   store, to purchase some blankets. I was   joined at the door by Terry, who insisted   in the blandest manner possible that     I should share his bed, as he had sufficient clothes for the two of us. I thanked him,   but of course declined, and he accompanied   me to make the necessary purchase.   Having found a store, we entered. and I   asked for two pairs of large sized blankets.   They were handed down. I enquired the price. " Three pound ten a pair," was the brief   reply.     'They are very dear,' I remarked.   'If they don't suit, don't take 'em,' was the reply ; and the shopkeeper commenced   putti...

CHAPTER III. New Quarters and New Characters. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 6 November 1860

CHAPTER III. New Quarters and New Characters.   I have shifted my quarters since the closing of the last chapter. I am now two miles higher up the creek, paying two pounds per week for my board, in a large calico boarding-house, which has been re- cently erected. A long table runs through the centre of the building:; on each side and across one end are tiers of sleeping places, like the berths of an emigrant ship, one over the other. My worthy friend Teny has obtained the situation of cook to this establishment, at six pounds per week ; but be it remembered, I have no further connection with him in any way. I have joined a party of three others, who have not a claim at present, but who know of a piece of first-rate ground, but have not   quite sufficient means to purchase the necessary implements. I have offered to buy the tools, providing I am paid back out of the first gold obtained. All agreed; we are to commence operations on the fol- lowing Monday morn...
