THE following report by Dr von Sommer of a late visit to the Eastern Districts, for the purpose of a Geological examination o#the country, will, we believe, be perused with much interest by the public. The want of information on this subject, which would enable the colonists to judge in some measure as to their chance of disco- vering mineral deposits in any particular locality, has long been greatly felt, and we are gratified in being enabled to publish the result of Dr von Sommer's investiga- tions : Perth, February 5, 1848. Sir,- According to your instructions, I went, January I5th, in company with Mr. Bland (Protector of Natives in the Eastern Districts), first to Toodyay, and from thence to York. The greater fertility of those portions of the country, in comparison with the land westwards of the Darling Range (with few exceptions of places enriched by marine and diluvial deposits), is very obvious geo- logically to account for, by the more or less rapid and perfect transition f...

The Marvellous. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 26 February 1848

The Marvellous THE WILD MAN OF THE AUSTRALIAN WOODS. -- A creature described by the na- tives as something very similar to an ou- rang-outang is supposed by many colonists to exist in the mountain ranges at the back of Western Port, but their ideas of it are mixed up with such a superstitious dread as to induce many to consider it only in the light of an imaginary being, created by their own fears, or by interested parties amongst themselves; but the fact of some   strange and peculiar tracks having been noticed in the ranges, recorded in the Port Philip papers at the time they were disco- vered, and many other circumstances, seem to indicate that there is some animal resi- dent there which has not yet been seen by a white man; and from the position of this tract of country, being quite out of any road pursued by European travellers, it is very possible such a thing may exist. An account of this animal was given me by Worrouge-toulon, a native of the Woe worong tribe, i...

THE . INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. " Voxpopuli, vox Dei." SATURDAÏTÎ^BUARF22, 1848. WE have to congratulate our fellow co- lonists on the departure for England of the colonial barque Merope, the first vessel of any large size ever owned by a settler of Western Australia, In every other^ respect but her build, this vessel is truly colonial, her rigging, sails, captain, cargo, and crew being entirely colonial (with the exception of 5 Americans going home), and we may truly assert that no vessel ever leí); port in a better state to ensure a prosperous and speedy voyage, Her rig was peculiarly neat and well executed, in fact, in that department she appeared more in the style of a man of war, than any merchant vessel we ever before saw, , Her appearance under sail was extremely goodf And her sailing qualities found to be ex cellent, as was proved by her being out of sight, from Fremantle, in about two hours ; shortly after she weighed anchor the log was heaved, and she waB found to be going six ...
