THE "VALEDICTORY" COUNCIL MEETING, Or »«every dog has his day," or "th© worm will turn." ¡Have you ever watched a congrega- tion of children playing together in a back yard? (For if you have done so you will have observed that one of their principal pastimes is .playing "at shop and house." They generally are in charge of one slightly older or Aviser than themselves, a "little mother" amongst them, and1 under her direc- tions they let their imaginations run riot. They, in order words, build castles in the air and occupy them for the time being with the greatest plea- sure to themselves and without in any way affecting or influencing any but themselves. So with our councillors and their "little mother," the Warden on Satur- day at the valedictory meeting of playing'at "suop." lt may have been noticed in the col- umns of our contemporary for some time back that The Warden would make his Valedictory Address at Saturday's meeting." For days past wc were promised the Warden's valedic- to...

3fC 3ÇC 3ÇC Cartwright's Pictures. There is no need to talk about the magnificent performance enjoyed last Friday night by a big audience-for this present Friday is absolutely the "topist-top-noteher" of anything ever shown in Ulverstone. The words "Tom Mix'' are enough to stamp it as a bonza evening's entertainment. "What Tom Mix cannot do to send you home delighted 'with your evening out nobody else can do. "The Wilderness Trail" has at last been screened by Mr Cart- wright, and this wonderful romance of thc "Northern snow" -will crown with success his efforts to please his ever en- larging Friday evening's audiences. The other- tit-bits for the evening, arc star features also, and certainly Friday nights wind up the the week with the cream of the picturcland milk jug, for Mr Cartwright is a specialist of 20 years' standing in pictures, and conse- quently knows where to lay his hands on "the best" for his patrons. Open Wide—Thank You! [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 17 April 1920

Open Wide-Thank You ! As our local sport and Empire builder, J. M. McDonough has been "looking down in the mouth" for a couple of years now without a spell, and as the most hardened, hardwork- ing sinner reaches at last a stage when he must have a rest from his labors and a change of air and occupation, and a time when, as Lauder says, "he can lay in the morn" without the fear of his teeth aching Nietta patients arriving at the Reibey-street surgery before himself, he has slipped away over the pond to "Vic." for a month's holiday, and well he deserves it; his record all round is a good one since last he was over with the "old folks at home."   Well, we wish Mr and Mrs Mc. the best of holidays-don't forget to go to the pictures, Mrs Mc!!! And whilst   the popular Jack is away the genial young locum, Mr Gatehouse, from "Vic," will with his winning smile and winsome ways keep things moving for you. Hitting Below the Belt. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 15 May 1920

Hitting Below the Belt. In the issue of the "Leven Lever" , of Hay 1 reference was made hy myself to certain incidents connected .with tho valedictory meeting of the Leven Coun- cil and the dinner following same, re- flecting upon the educational accora plishnients of two members of the Council and upon the tactfulness of our worthy Town Clerk. Neither of these references reflects anything but discredit upon me for having penned them ; they are vulgar and discourteous, and discreditable to any gentleman, which I hope I am, to have made, and in addition I regret to. say they caused considerable annoyance and pain to those gentlemen. I therefore had the greatest pleasure in tendering personally to them at the first opportunity presenting itself, and in thc presence of their brother council- lors, my regrets and apologies for hav- ing stooped to such uncalled for and abusive language, and I asked their ac- ceptance of such apologies. Being gentlemen they acted as such, and recognising ...
