CHAPTER: IV. . , .'DISAPPOINTMENT AND APPOINTJtKXT. It was- bitter cold, that January night on winch Professor Pike returned with young John Spencer to tho paternal roof. The wind rose as the shades of night gathered over the commercial metropolis, nnd shrill blasts howled among the tall chimneys, like angry demons chanting u wall. Hut Iho BQvuro cold was most oruelly felt in thoso vico-lmiintcd regions where vlco re velled undismayed and drunkenness caroused undisturbed. Substances Liable to Spontaneous Combustion. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 11 October 1890

ffotaU&eu Llaftls to Spontaneous Combustion. . Cotton-seed oil will tako firo oven when mixed with. 25 per cent, of potrolcum oil, but 10 per cent, of animal or vegetable oil will co far to prevent combustion. Olive-oil is combustible, and mixed with rags, hay, or sawdust, will produce sponta neous combustion. Coal-dust, flour-dust, starch, flour (osps cially rye flour), are all explosive- whon mixed with certain proportions of air. New starch is bigtily explosive in its con- 'linuted Btato. Saw-dust, in a very fino state, whon con fined in a close chuto and water directed on it. is also liable to take Tiro. Sawdust ihould never be used in oilshops or ware houses to collect drippings or leakages from casks. Dry vegetable or animal oil inevitably takes fire when saturating cotton waste at I BOdeg. F. Spontaneous combustion occurs most quiokly when tho cotton is soaked with its own weight of oil. Tho addition of 40 per cent, of miueral oil (density 0-890) of great viscosity, a...
