A MODERN UTOPIA. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 31 October 1885

A MODERN UTOPIA. BY DOMBRUSKI. Near the bank of the mighty Mitta, at the intersection of the Wodonga, Snowy Creek, Dart River, and Upper Murray roads, is situate what promises to be, in   the near future, an important busines centre. Some seventeen or eighteen   years ago, a level-headed descendant of the har'y Norsemen , who for some years, in sundry mining camps in the Ovens and Murray districts, had with varying success prosecuted the enterprising but risky business of furnishing at protean crowd of diggers with clothes, tucker, and tools, formed the notion that, in view of the then juvenile Land Act of 1869, it would be a safer " spec." to negotiate with farmers than diggers. He drew out his pegs from Sandy Creek, and shifted his thirteen years' gatherings, which consisted. of his old store, a wife and four or five children, a few horses and drays, and not too much cash, but with good sound credit with the Melbourne merchants, and selectcd a site whereon ...

[?] Towong Sentinel. "Awake! Arise! Or be for ever fallen!" —MILTON. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1885. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 31 October 1885

"Awake ! Arise ! Or be for ever fallen!   Milton. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1885.     When two years ago the residents of Wodonga went wild with joy upon the occasion of the junction of the Mel- bourne and Sydney railway lines, we wonder that there was not to be found " one still strong man, in a blatant land " carefully to examine and criti- cise the mutual arrangements made between the colonies, in order to see that Wodonga obtained real, and not merely apparent, justice. Had we possessed in our midst such a man as   Mr. PASCOE, in the also and indefatigable town clerk of Echuca, we are assured that such arguments would have been advanced as to have caused a modifica- tion of the well-meaning, but blunder- ing and injurious, agreement made by our impulsive friend, the Hon. THOMAS   BENT. If ever there was an example   of the truth of the fable of the dog who gave away the substance for the shadow, it is to b...

CONCERT AT KIEWA. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 7 November 1885

CONCERT AT KIEWA "Can any good thing come out of   Nazareth?" inquired the sceptical old   Israelite as he sat chewing pibtail under the fig-tree. The little town of Kiewa has for a long time borne the reputation of a species of modern Nazareth, but having found a messiah in the shape of     the genial host of the Lagoon hotel, Mr     Denny, a new era has dawned, and Kiewa has begun to assert itself. A very good thing was produced on Friday, 30th October, in the form of a concert, which, under the auspices of Messrs Denny,   Burns, and Austin, was given in aid of the prize funds of the Kewa and Tangam- balanga school. The show was run in the Assembly-hall, and Host Denny who, in a thing of this sort is literally a host in himself, had arranged all   the stage paraphernalia excellently. The affiar having been well noised abroad, the curtain roise to a very good audience at eight p....
