MANSFIELD SHIRE ELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 20 August 1869

SMANSFIELD SHIRE ELECTION. Those persons who have been fortunate enough to be placed upon the ratepayers' roll had an important duty to perform on Thursday last, when Messrs Hoagemau, Tomkins, and Cotter contested to obtain the seats recently vacated in the Shire Council. During the earlier part of the day very few-porsons could be oeen loitering about the Shire Hall, as is usually the case on like occasions. The ex citement was less intense than that exhibited on former election days, and less interest seemed to pervade. Two clowns sat in the vehicle drawn by this extraordinary uanimal, and perambulated the town. This novel sight caused a deal of mirth. Towards evening a great number of voters flocked to the polling booth, and waited for nearly an hour and a half to hear the result, which was announced as follo...

THE ELECTION SPREE. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 20 August 1869

THE ELECTION SPREE. Benalla, you're a rowdy town, But you're got men of great renown- Yes, every man upon the roll Who rushed on Thursday to the poll. There was Milky White and Bubby Black, And Bill with chaff upon his back; Tight Breeches, with feathers like a frill, Came dashing from Simaria Hill. Don Rastrix, too, with glases green, A comely phiz like velveteen, Came bawling out to one and all To rush to the Commercial Hall. " Vote for the man who has the brains" (Here's Tommy Terrible from the plains, And his son George, that polished man, The comeliest youth of all the clan). " What care I for Milky or Mills, I backs the man as buys my pills." Here's Gardiner coming at great speed   On Pietrus's new velocipede, " Good old man," cries Mickey Jones, "There's something soft in his dry bones;' Then slapped his hand above his knee,   I've got some fivers here, you see. What if I to great Hector bend, "And in the Road Board have a friend?   SPer...
