After much discussion, it was "esolvedwon-the motion of the Mayor, who explained that he did so ex officio as chairman of'the council in committee, that the lowest ten der, tiath-0of=Messrs Furneanux, Besley, and Co. for' erection of the new town hall, to cost £14,236, be accepted. An ainemidnent proposed by Cr John Turner, `.bnt.ounot seconded, was as follows:-" That inasmuch as the cost of the new proposed town hall will exceed the amount provided in the loan schedule by upwards of £5,000, and as the payment of the said extra sum would necessarily involve extra taxation;-this council decides that the erection of the hall be postponed until after the election of the new council in August next."
