Timber Needed in Australia. Reprinted from Melbourne Leader. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 7 August 1903

Tiber Needed in Australia. BY THOS. B. MERRY. Reprinted from Melbourne Leader. The want of suitable manufactur ing timber in Australia, especially such as is used in the manufacture of waggons, is one of the first things which catches the notice of Ameri can visitors like myself. Nearly all the waggon timber used in Australia . is imported from the Atlantic States of the American Union, the hickory of the States which lie north of the Delaware being almost indispens able in the manufacture of light buggies and cabs. In the Pacific States, the want of waggon timber has long been painfully apparent, as the hickory is not a native of that section of the country; and all efforts to domesticate it have so far failed of success. But a substitute for it has been introduced which answers every purpose for omni buses, heavy farm waggons, and the machinery used in harvesting the cereals. This is the peccan of Texas [Carya oliviferus. — Ed.~l, which is a species of hickory, but move of a tropi...
