The following telegram has been received by the local Post Office from the Brisbane office: "A signal (the word "Victoria") will be sent you on Tuesday next about 10 p.m. that the thanksgiving hymn is com-   menced in London at noon. Inform local authorities who may wish to arrange for a notification to the public when the signal is received by you." It has been decided to fire off a gun at the Post Ollice directly the signal is received, and a man stationed on the top of the building, will burn a blue light. The National Anthem will then be song by the public congregated on the beach, and by those attending the Caledonian Ball. A little son of Mr G. W. Le Vaux met with rather a serious accident at Kuranda on Tuesday, 15th inst. He was playing with a tomahawk, and in making a blow at a stick managed to cut one of his big toes nearly off. The little sufferer was at once attended by Dr. Koch, who happened to be at Kuranda at the time, and he was subsequently brought down ...

Cricket. MAREEBA V. BIBOOHRA C.C. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 21 June 1897

Cricket, MAREEBA V. BIBOOHRA CC. On Saturday, 13tli imt., . cricket match, which " created considerable local interest and attracted a large attendance, was played at Mareeba tween the alwve. Clubs, captained respectively by M. Gabriel and -P. Anderson, and which resulted in a comparatively easy victory for the visiting team. To crictaws present, it ' was evident that the ^Biboohra team contained all the' necessary elements for first-class play, and had they but opportunity for even occasional practise they would furnish an eleven difficult to bent. For Biboohra the bowling of Eager »nd Anderson was exceptionally good, as will be seen by the analysis, ami for Mareeba, J. Brown ami Gabriel did well with the ball, whilst the field- ing of V. Hides elicited loud »nd frn- ] quent appltttse. j The Mareeba t?am having scoied 81 for tho loss of six ' 'vickct8, declared their second innings closed, but at the call of time (5,30 p.m.) when the stumps were drawn, the visitors had in their sec...

"MORNING POST." "Neither by fear nor by favor, tut by ? Truth alone.? linday Sranlar 9va» Slat IfttV THE QUEEN'S JUBILEE. To-morrow, Cairns will join hands with every other town in the British Empire in celebrating in a fitting manner the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria. We say in a fitting manner, advisedly, for what better method could be adopted than the lives of thc children of the town and district ! We, -whose feet are now treading thelhard road of life, look back at times with feelings of regret,* to the days when aili life was enveloped with a splendid luminosity through which only the glorious, the joyous, and the good shone - as . possibilities. The illusions have departed, and with them that : keen enjoyment of life, which is only possible in childhood. We are brought face to face with the hard, brutal facts of existence, and it is with a sight of fond recollection that our memories wander back to the days when unalloyed happiness was possible. It is for th...

NOTES AND NOTICES. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 21 June 1897

NOTES AND NOTICES. Owing to oar usual publishing day (ailing on Jamies day, the ."Mering Vost" is issued this week on Monday evening instead of Wednesday morning. There are few ' holidays in a printer's life, and when one dees'come along that is available to him he should bc given an opportunity of enjoying it. The Committee of the Jubilee Celebrations wish it to be generally known that all children attending thc Sports to-morrow must be furnished with a mug, cup, or other drinking utensil. The Marine Hoard inquiry into the recent accident to R.M.S. Duke of Devonshifc completely exonerates the pilot from all blaine. The rock on which the vessel struck is au uncharted one, and the lioard recommends that the" locality of the wreck be examined by a diver with a view to rind-, ing such rfck. Yesterday being Coronation Day, special services were held in St John's Church by Rev. Maitland Woods, Incumbent. The special feature of both morning and evening services was thc music, and there wa...
