HOW HE PUT IT. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 23 August 1884

HOW HE. PUT IT. The following letter is said to have been sent ; by a distinguished artist in the north of Scotland to a! : friend of his in Dundee. :— Dear T.— A curious fellow turned up here the other day,' with detice a copper, or pouch to hold such an arti cle. He wasn't even in rags but he was literally without a rag to cover his nakedness. He cither would not or could not give his name; and reason he would not, but kicked up a bonnie ' Hpw d'ye de ' until, for peace sake, we had to pro vide him with some clothes. With diffi culty we got tho fellow in a- decent con dition, then offered him something to eat ; but lie got perfectly furious, and would not tako deuce a thing but drink. I believe the ' sowl ' lives on drink alone. He seems an old fellow, too, for lie his absolutely bald -headed and perfectly toothless. He gave Mrs. X. a bonnie flight, . I can tell you \ and indeed she took to her bed over the matter, and Dr. Z . has been in attendance upon her ever since. The doctor...

LIFE. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 23 August 1884

LIFE. v. The leading characteristic of life, com mon, to all its manifestations and dis tinctive of its workings, is a tendency. or power to cpmpel the matter with which it is associated to assume some speciality of form. This is why wo cannot certain ly exclude crystallisation from the domain of life, although, if it be included, it must occupy, so far as we can tell, the very; lowest grade. Certain it is that all things outside tho pale of life may be heaped together in a mass wliich the sur roundings will determine. The matter composing an inanimate mass is simply a heap of any magnitude and indefinite shape. The matter composing on organ ism, or even a crystal, is so brought and held together that it has a separate in dividual existence. We may 1 therefore say that the first and chief property of life is to fashion or organise. Wheii life ceases, the particles of matter which life has combined and kept together, as it were, in its grasp fall out of the relations into which life ...

Current Items. The Balmain Debating Society held a public debate w ith members of the Wool alira Sooiety in the' local Town Hall - on Thursday evening. . The subjeot for dis cussion was — ' Education is not the duty of the State.' MesBrs A. B. Fordham, J. H. Vale, and Angelo Smith ' took the nega tive for the Balmain side, and they argued at considerable lengtn and with good tact that tlie State had no right to interfere;with the functions of parents ; that by so' doing they meddled with the religious liberty of the subjeot ; that it was too expensive and too inefficient a system, and caused heavy taxation on the poor. They raised several other good points, and we regret our in ubiety to publish them, through press of iadvertisemonts and other matter at the last moment. Messrs C. Oakes, .J. Sarids and R.
