PUBLIC TEA MEETING AT TOOWOOMBA. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 15 July 1858

PUBLIC TEA MEETING AT TOOWOOMBA. Scarcely three years ago hardly a hut was to be seen in the locality now known at Toowoomba, and those who beheld it then, would hardly have supposed, that in so short a time, it would have become the haunt of bney humanity, that houses would appear with mush- room rapidity, and that churches, chapels, and schools, would indicate, in unmistakable characters, the residence of civilised man. Another proof is thus afforded as of the mighty designs of Providence, in extending into unknown regions, the Anglo Saxon family, with their Christianity, civilization, and progressive characteristics —converting barren lands into fruitful fields, and causing the wests wilderness to blosssom like the rose. In the rapid dissemination of the great Saxon family throughout the Australian continent, we think there is a possibility—and a very reasonable one too—of the       prophecy of the patriotic Wentworth being yet fulfilled tha...

COMMERCIAL REPORT. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 15 July 1858

COMMERCIAL REPORT. The late heavy rains have made the thoroughfare on the Downs and Condamine nearly impassable for loaded vehicles, and has caused business to be rather slack since our last report. Shearing supplies are now being forwarded to the stations, and if the weather will only continue fine, a brisk trade with the interior will shortly be resumed. We understand that several large capitalists meditate the immediate erection of capacious stores for the reception of wool at Toowoomba, and, also, that a number of horse teams will be placed on the Drayton and Ipswich line, for the conveyance of the staple product of the district to the head of the navigation. It seems to be the prevailing opinion that this description of land carriage will shortly supercede the use of bullocks on the road below the Main Range, owing to the quantity of enclosed land, which will render it very difficult to obtain sustenance for them; and measures to provide against this contingency are now being w...

THE DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. DRAYTON, THURSDAY, JULY 15, 1858. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 15 July 1858

DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. DRAYTON, THURSDAY, JULY 15, 1858. OUR readers are aware that Railway projects on an extensive scale are just about to be com- menced in Victoria. Contracts have been entered into for the part execution of two lines of road, radiating from the metropolis to tbe principal gold-fields ; and before the portions bargained for are completed, doubtless other contracts will be taken up for carrying the lines of road to their   natural terminus. The completion of the extra lines at present contemplated in that colony will, we believe, involve an expenditure of some eight or ten millions sterling, distributed, however, over a period of several years. This is an enormous obligation for so young a colony to incur, but it is probably not more than the material pros- perity of the Victoria colony fully warrants. The interest on the outlay for many years to come may be but small ; but the public will be incalculable gainers from the very first ; and the Governme...

INDIA. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 15 July 1858

INDIA. Via Colombo, we have six days' latest news. The Madras Overland Athenoenm, of 10th May, thus summarises the latest intelligence : — Some surprise has been felt at the delay which has occurred in the publication of the sentence on the ex-King of Delhi. The matter is now cleared up, for we learn that the Court which tried him has sent the papers to the home authorities, who, it seems, are to dispose of the few days in this world which yet remain to the   imbecile old traitor. The administration of the Delhi territory has been assumed by Sir John Lawrence. The Englishman, on the authority of a private letter, mentions that all was qniet at Lucknow. Three members of the ex-king's family have been shot ; one of them was a son of the ex- king, and full brother of Secinder Hushmut, who went with the Queen mother to England. Mr. Montgomery, the new Commissioner of Oude, is endeavouring to re-organise matters in that country. By the Governor-General's pro- clamation all t...
