The Sentinel. SATURDAY, 2ND FEBRUARY, 1884. [Newspaper Article] — Queenscliff Sentinel, Drysdale, ... — 2 February 1884

SATURDAY, 2ND FEBRIUAIJY, 1884, THERiE has been lately resident among us, as an invalid, a gentleman, who for sevcral years bore an important part in the government of the country, Mr. J. G. Francis. He died hlcre, and we think it right to add to the memory of an able and honest man our tribute of respect, and feeling of deep sorrow at his. re moval. However his politics may have clashed with others at times, he hadi the truly loyal and constitutional ring about liim, which made hlimi with otlhers a ,iol)le bulwark of defence in time of ilaigcr. Everyone knows that only a very short time sincei there were rocks ahead, in the political world. All is cahnlm weather now, but it is owing mainly to the firm and law-abiding stand made by men of the stamp and calibre of Mr. Francis. In matters of opinion, what was best for the Colony, Protection or Free Trade, secular or not solely secular Education, he fought shoulder to shoulder with men whom he. had after wards on principle to oppose.
