BUILDERS' EXCHANGE. ADDITIONAL STOREYS PROPOSED. Matter Shelved. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 24 November 1913

BUILDERS' EXCHANGE. ADDITIONAL STOREYS PROPOSED. Matter Shelved. Master Builders, at the last meeting of their Asso ciation; shelved a recommendation from a special sub-committee to add two storeys to their building, known as the Builders' Exchange. Actually they referred the matter back to the sub-committee, and affirmed their disinclination to move from the pre sent room. As the proposition was based on the re moval of the Association's business to another floor, the nroiect has thus been nullified in its nresent form. The sub-committee will now either have to discover a new means of effecting the purpose, or drop the project, for the present at all events. The Secretary stated the case for the subcommit tee, recommending the work be carried out. Pie quoted figures which have previously been pub lished in this paper. The work was eatimated to cost £r-:'!0n. The additional annual re venue was estimated at £850; the additional ex pciuliture was estimated at £'±S-), so that the addi ...

THE 'COLLUSION' CHARGES. PREMIER HOLM AN HEDGES— AS USUAL. Minister Griffith Cites a Case. As a result of the challenge to the Premier and the Minister for Works, to substantiate their 'col- lusion'5 charges, the Master Builders' Association received replies from both politicians. The Premier simply hedged, as is his custom, but the Works Minister, avIio can be always counted on to hit back, no matter what his other failings may be. cited a case. The official letters read : — From the Premier. Premier's Om'ce. 14th Nov.. J'.ii::. Sir,— . ??' THE PAST SEASON'S RECORDS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 24 November 1913

THE PAST SEASON'S RECORDS. It is an axiom to 'speculate where values, are rising,' and as increased con struction with settlement is one of the biggest factors to increase values, it stand's to reason that values would be on the u]) grade where records are being made in house buildings. ; . ;-. In this respect it is interesting to note that Randwick has had the greatest con structional development with 'GOO new buildings, thus maintaining the lead it established last year with , 5S.2. Canter bury third the previous year, with 4G4, coming second with 340, beating Mar rickvifle for the second place last season, Marrickville coming third with 400, being tfO less than last year. It is significant to note that the first three of the previous season again filled the leading three places. Waverley. with 43!). came fourth, ris ing from sixth last season, at 300. Willoughby. with '452. came fifth, ris ing from seventh last season at 27), a sig nificant increase, due to some extent to the Nor...

IN VICTORIA. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 24 November 1913

IN VICTORIA. Minister Magelthorn is at^preseuL considering the* allotment of grants to 'the various sfiires for road and -bridge construction. Though he has a sum of less than £:J0,OO0 to dispose of, lie has received ap plications for sums aggregating about £.'300,0(10. The Minister has noted that the valuations of the shires varied considerably. Some shires, he said, levied on values which represented .'{?- to -IU per cent, of the market value of the land, whilst in other cases the. value taken for ratimr mirnoses was 70 to .SO per cent, of the actual market value. Neither a shilling rate, nor any Other rate, struck on such basis, would give similar results in different shires. That position would be altered if the bill to amend the Local Government Act, now before Parliament, was amended so as to compel all municipalities to accept the land tax valuations as their bases for rat ing purposes. Then there would be uniformity throughout the shires. The method of allotting grants would...
