The Daily News. TUESDAY, AUGUST 8, 1882. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 8 August 1882

TUESDAY, AUGUST S, 1SS2. Su uprise was depicted on the countenance oil more than one lion, member when Mr. Shbnton moved that an Address be presented to His Excellency thu Governor praying that hu will be pleased to place on the Estimates a sum sufficient to defray the cost of the construction of a bonded warehouse in the city of Perth. Our contemporary The Inquirer, in a recent issue, pointed out the necessity that would arice for such a building, and we were prepared to see a recommendation from the Acting Director of Public Works that such a building should be erected. Perhaps he deferred this until after the arrival of the Com missioner of Railways. Commercial routine will undergo many changes when, the line is in working order for goods traffic. Even Tvith the short line between Fremaritle and Guildford a new order of things will have birth, which will be more matured when the extension is open throughout to York. The large ware houses of our merchants will not be so much in re...

CABLE TELEGRAMS. LONDON, August 6. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 10 August 1882

CABLE TELEGRAMS. ASSOCIATED PBKSS TELEGRAMS. LONDON', August 6. Further particulars of a reconnoitring1 force, under the command of Sir Archibald Allison, to reconnoitre the enemy, with a view to ascertain the exact force at the command of Arabi Bey, the rebel leader, and the number of guns in his possession at the position now occupied by him, state that these objects have been successfully accom plished. An engagement ensued between the British and Arabi's troops. The reconnoitring £orce consisted of the 30th Regiment, and both sides used their artillery freely. The xiver Nile is rising rapidly, and its overflowing will probably impede military operations in Egypt. A statement to the effect that the present ?visit of Cetewayo is merely a 'prelude to his 'being restored to his former position of ? leading chief of the Zulus, has provoked much, adverse discussion in South Africa, especially in Natal, where numerous meet ings have been held to protest against his restoration, as a st...

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. TUESDAY, AUGUST 8 [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 10 August 1882

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TUESDAY, Atjotjst 8. The Speaker took the chair at 7 o'clock. Mr. Parker rose to ask the noble Lord, the. Leader of the House, whether the ?'Grdverrnnentintend after the present year to continue to let a room at the city railway station as a drinking saloon. He felt cer tain that persons who had access to., the railway station in the city must have seen that this room had degenerated into a mere drinking' saloon. The hon. member in drawing the attention of the Government to this state of things was quite certain that His Excellency the Governor had every desire, to prevent the spread of drunkenness, and for that reason he hoped that after the end of the year such practices as obtained would no longer be countenanced. ? . - The Colonial Secretary replied that at present it was the intention of the Govern ment to continue to let a room at the city railway station for the purpose named, but that it would be placed under greater restrictions, in accordance with the s...

The Daily News. FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 1882. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 11 August 1882

%\)t Batty ^clns* FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 1S32. We publish elsewhere in our columns a copy of the official Eejjort of the Inspecting Field Officer of the West ern Australian. Volunteers for the year 1882, up to date. Colonel Angelo was doubtless aware in framing that document that it would be subject to close criticism, as niuch in its general tenor as in its purely professional character. With regard, to the latter, which we will first re-' mark uj-on briefly, without pretend ing to give any decided opinion on precise military matter, we may say that the Report is just what we should have expected, judging from the antecedents of the writer, who has brought with him to this colony from Tasmania, as -well as from the East Indies, the reputation of a ' facile pen' with a thorough know ledge of the technicalities of- his pro feidiou. '7T- ty.111 go I ar tiicr, uud admit our obligation to him for placing before the public so clearly, we may even say so graphically a picture of our military ...
