THE NEW; PRINCE OF BULGAR IA. blinti~.n of Prinen Feordinand, who has recently bei(n elected by the Sobranjo as Prinen of Bulgaria, thu " Spectator "says: Thle Bulgarian Grand Assol bly has assembled in dillicult circumstances, and like all popu lar bodies so placed, except the I-House of Oommons, has displayed decision and en(rgy. It has elected a Prince by a unanimous vote, and has intimated that if its candlidato is re jected by the Powers, it will declare the two Bulgarius independent, and elect a king without reference to thle Treaty of Berlin, in which it had no share. SONS OF TEMPERANCE. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 27 August 1887

, SONS OP'TEMPERANCB, OuePr?nCs from the 19th annual report of the National Division of Australasia: Another year has passed away, a year of struggle to many. Long continued droughts and bad: Government caused a want of con. fidenco; trade suffered, and, notvwithstanding tihe droughts liave ben succeeodedl by general rains and the whole land is full of luxuriant herbage so as to make men rqjoice--yet thlre are hundreds able and willing to work still to be provided for. This should and would be an easy task if men were wise, but while we spend £5,000,00 per annum in strong drink, an amnount equal to about £20 per head for each male over 18 years of age, want and misery will over be found in thie land.' 1HIard times have naturallyallected our order in two ways. Scarc;ty of emnploy mnot has caused many of our members to s.eglect the payment of their contributions and run into arrears, while as work becomes scarce sickness generally increases. These things should not be, and wore our fo...

LATEST TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE. London, August 23. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 27 August 1887

LATEST. TELEGRAPHIO INTELLI GIENCE, (From thie Sydniyl Papers.) London, August 23. In the House of Commons last night MIr. Labouchero aiked the Under Secretary:for Foreign Aiahirs what action her Majesty's Government had taken relative tlothe French colonists who have been sent to the'New IHebrides since thle French occupation of tlhoso islands. Sir James Fergusson stated that there was nothing to prevent either French or British subjects settling in the New Hebrides. The telegram which was received from Merv, stating that the Ameer of Afghanis tan lhad been obliged to hlavo his foot ampu tated owing to gangrene, has been contra dicted, and is generally discredited. Messrs. Kains and Jackson estimate that the average yield of the English wheat crdp will be over 31 bushels to the acre. Other estimates place it higher. The yield of bar ley is slightly under the avoerage ; and that of oats is considerably below the averago. Since the proclamation of the Natiopal. Leagnue, 80 members of...

NOTICE.. TI-HERfE appears to be a kind of belief or suspicion prevalent among some per. sons in the town and neighbourhood to the effect that the purchase of the " Reporter" by me from Mr. Major is not altogethor of a complete and thorough-going charactr, and that Mr. IM. still retains some sort of latent proprietary interest in the affair, that I have leased it from him, or am carrying it on in his behalf or something of that kind. Now in the case of a journal established in Syd. noy or any large town, such a rumour would be of little consequence, as it would only affect an infinitisnmal proportion of those among whom the paper circulated. It is otherwiso in a town and d~istrict like Kiama--indoed in any country district. I therefore think it worth while to notice the matter for the purpose of giving such belief or suspicion the most enmphlatic contradiction. Every one is likely to have enemies; and there may be persons who would at least decline to support this journal because it ...
