Obituary. LATE MRS HELEN JOHNSTON. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 31 January 1914

Obituary. -----o-----       LATE MRS HELEN JOHNSTON. We regret to record the death of Mrs Helen Johnston, which oc- curred at her residence, Hanover street, Oakleigh, on Sunday last, at the ripe old age of 87 years 10 months. Mr and Mrs James John- ston were amongst the very early pioneers of the dis- trict. They came to Victoria, with their family of four children, in 1854, and for 2 years rented a farm at Merri Creek and grew fruit. Two years later they re- moved to Notting Hill and leased a block of 100 acres, which Mr Johnston afterwards purchased and resided on till his death 12 years ago. The condition of the country in those early days may be gauged from the fact that when Mr John- ston first took up the land he had much difficulty in keeping cattle. Having on one occasion lost 15 bullocks and had the legs of 2 horses broken, principally through drought and the animals getting bogged in Dandenong Creek and what then answered for roads. M...

A Runaway Horse. The "Times" Office the Objective. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 7 February 1914

A Runawvay Horse. The fTimres" Office the Ob jective. On Tuesday morning about half-past 10 a sensation was created by a runaway horse. Mr A. E. Rowlands' horse and jinker were standing opposite his shop in Eaton street when, startled by Wilson's motor-'bus passing, the animal (which does not seem to understand horseless vehicles) took fright and bolted. It jumped on to the footway and collided with the corner post of Stainton's verandah, smashing the post down and also knocking the jinker into pieces. It then headed for Atherton road and came straight for the plate glass front of the Times office. Jumping through with its fore legs, it reached to within a few inches of the table where Sir K. E. Mc Lean sat writing up the accounts. Fortunately the horse did not introduce itself bodtly into the office, or the consequences might have been serious. As it was, Mr McLean miraculously escaped injury. The Editor .also accounts himself lucky, as he had just quitted the room when the horse (...

Our Letter Box. OAKLEIGH FOOTBALL CLUB TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 7 February 1914

Our Letter Box. -- - - DAKLEIGH FOOTBALL CLUB To 'nw T!nU'roR. Sir,-I have read with great interest the letters by "Rex", "One Who Knows" and the late Sec retary of Football Club and I am pleased to see the interest that has so "suddenly" shown itself in the management of the club and feel sure that if these able ''pens" will keep going until the annual meeting sonme 'life" will be put into the club. There is one part of" Rex" letter that I don't agree with re the late President paying all deficiencies in order to square the balance-sheet and feel sure the members of the club don't want to be under any obligation to any official in that respect. With regard to the "Re form" party and the Liberal party Iam sorry to hear of' ,doliticss, being introduced into the matter and I my advice to "Rex" is "keep out of the ruck" or he might get hurt. * One who Knows" seems to be level headed in his advice to wait till the annual meeting before pas sing judgement on the "manage ment." Sporting News. The Victorian Racing Club hold a meeting at Sandown Park on Wednesday nest, when £450 in prize money will be given. Good entries have been received and a good day's outing is assured. "Barrier" was fairly successful on Saturday last, tipping the winner of the hurdle, the dead heaters, Campus and The Tuck ; Dewberry and Coronatus. In the hurdle, Idol Gun came down at the last jump and gave his rider, Mr Don Villiamsou (Oak leigh) a severe fall. The horse was destroyed. Dunolly, winner of a Standlishl Handicap and also ran Soultline to within a head in the Newmnarket Handicap, made the journey, but was unsuccessful. On holiday bent and apparently enjoying better health than usual Host Tom Bryant, formerly of the Union Hotel, put in a couple of days in Bendigo this week. Torn, although still in excellent con dition, does not tip the beanm at 22 stone and odd lbs as formerly. Mrs Bryant accompanied him to the golden city. . . .
