THEY SAY: That Bcga lias a veteran journa list who received his first lessons in shorthand from Sir Isaac Pitt man himself. ? . That Brydon, of Gipps-strcet, is running a Spring Show all on his own — principally of high class dra pery. That about 130 peels, have nomi nated for Meaker and Underbill's torchlight handicap to-night ; and That the regular and liberal manner in which runners nomi nate is an evidence that peds. re cogniso and appreciate the splen did management of the promoters. That while stock inspectors are engaged in chasing ' Strawberry ' round the yard to test her lungs the public of the country is being endangered by Sydney firms who convert rags from garbage tips into flock for bedding, and I , That some pig-styes are cleaner than many Sydney quarters in habited by humans. As You Like It. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 11 October 1905

As You Like It Faith-healer Dowie's stocks have come down with a-terriblc. run. When ho was in Australia' some years ago he posed as' the man who could heal anv eomi-laint from a gumboil to cancer by the ..simple power of faith. All the same the Budget never heard of a single authentic case where Elijah had got in his fine work on anything that couldn't be cured with a bread poultice. i And now the old man has beeii stricken with paralysis in Mexico, and the accumulated faith of the whole army of Zionitcs seems powerless to do him any good. Elijah's intemperate language and behavior while in Sydney got him into frequent trouble and .didn't seem to convince the people that his self-imposed mission was of anything like a divine origin. While wandering around Bega on Sunday afternoon I was attrac ted by the blare of a cornet. It sounded like a cornet which had not yet got into the habit of play ing hymns properly. It might have been a wicked old instrument bought out of a circus and us...

BEGA DISTRICT JOCKEY CLUB. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 14 October 1905

BEGA DISTRICT JOCKEY CLUB. OCTOBER MEETING. Althtftigh rain is anxiously looked for here as elsewhere, the local sporting public must be pardoned a feeling of disappointment at the prospect of a wet day for tho spring meeting on Wednesday. Right up w iiuun auuwury weamer conditions prevailed, but after that hour there was every appearance of a fine afternoon, and sportsmen grew cheerful and the ladies donned their spring meeting attire. Never theless, there is no doubt but that the threatening weather prevented many from being present, and under the circumstances the attend ance was exceptionally good. The fact that Bega conducts five race meetings a year successfully and profitably must be regarded as proof of the excellent and upto date management of the club, to gether with a complete confidence in its handicapper. THE TRUTH ABOUT CHILI [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 14 October 1905

THE TRUTH ABOUT CHILI That twenty-one furmcrs, includ ing six women, in despair, at their prospects in this state, arc leaving the Richmond River for Chili, and that eighty more may follow, looks like a terrible satire on the manage ment of our public lands after fifty vnnrc nf i-onrnoftn+ o + ivn irAvnrnmnnf. and universal suffrage. Canada, the U. S. A., and South Africa, even Argentina, one might understand a movement to, but the advantages the rocky strip between the Andies and the Pacific offers to English speaking agriculturist over Aus tralia are very few, and the disad vantages are many. Roughly speaking it may be said that for a man with capital enough to employ labor, no better place in the world can be found to make money in than the temperate South American Republics, while Australia is one of the worst. But cheap as agricultural hands work on our Northern Rivers, the Chili an peon is to be had at less than half the price — at about one-third if the value of his food be r...

The 'Use Your Own Products Exhibition.' The proposal to hold an exhibit iim of State. products only, with a viuw of inducing our own people to use their own products, is a -:oniiiioiid- nblp ono and has been taken up with much enthusiasm. The ex hibition is to \-c held in rryiliH'y and every care is being taken to make it attractive and thoroughly utilitarian in character. There has been too great a tendency on the part of Australians ihenir-elves t-- decry the products of their own countiy and treat with contempt anything Australian made. lint thanks to the action of Lady Ten nyson and the Vice-Regal follow ing, a boom has set in for Marrick ville and 'other colonial tweeds.
