The fast of Ab.[?] [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 August 1897

The fast of Ab.—z\X2. njnwi On Sunday next another is added to the anni versaries of our national calamity. No race on the face of God's earth that ever breathed the vital air of life, or walked beneath the shining rays of the sun, has ever suffered such vile and unmeasured abuse as has fallen to the lot of our people. All that ingenuity could invent; all that superstition in her darkest ?dreams could conjure, or hatred promulgate; all that vengeance could fulminate, culminated ?on this day. On this day the oppressor, with xevolting and repellant menace, endeavored to crush out the last ray of hope possessed by a 'benighted people. On this day the holy places were desecrated and the endur ance taxed, and the humility of Israel goaded to the utmost. Yet, notwithstanding these vile abuses ; notwithstanding the mighty blow struck on this day, and all its attendant^ infamy and degradation, Judaism has survived the mighty wreck, and appears before its Omnipotent Guardian in prayer, renew...

A GIFT TO JEWISH POOR IN SWEDEN. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 August 1897

A GIFT TO JEWISH POOR IN SWEDEN. An interesting letter has been addressed to Herr Abraham JSrachmanson, of Stockholm, by ' a grateful married couple belonging to the State Church.' The letter runs as follows : — ' Since we have learned that there are at present in our city a considerable number of persons in distress of the Mosaic creed, and that they consist in part of immigrants from other countries, so that in consequence their want of means is great, we take the liberty of sending you, on the occasion of a family fete, the sum of 1000 kroners, which you will kindly use for the needy. We do this all the more gladly since experience has shown us how ready your co-religionists are to come to the aid of distressed Christians.'

THE QUEEN'S REIGN. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 August 1897

THE QUEEN'S REIGN. The loyal address of congratulation to Her Majesty, on behalf of the Jews of England, was presented by the two representative bodies,, the Board of Deputies and the Anglo^Jewish Association, the precedent of 1887 being ex: aetly followed. The address had been engrossed and enclosed in a handsome album, of olive wood, from Je rusalem, and set with diamonds. On each of the four corners of the front cover is a chased gold palm, and in the centre the Royal Arms are enamelled with the figures 1837-1897 set. in diamands underneath. The album presented was enclosed in a case of blue velvet lined with white silk. It was made by Messrs. Elkington, of Regent-street. The following is the text o£ the address : — ' Who can find a Virtuous Woman. '' TO THE OUEEN'S MOST EXCELLENT' MAJESTY. Most Gracious Sovereign, — We, the London Committee of Deputies of the Bri tish Jews, representing the several Jewish Congrega tions in the United Kingdom, and we, the Council of the Anglo-Jew...

INTIMACIES. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 August 1897

INTIMACIES. By Rabbi Nathan Michnick, of Helena, Mont. In our fond attachment to the idea of inde pendence we forget jhow very little there really is of it in the world. Boast as we may of being self-centered and free from control, there is not one among us who is not dependent upon others for much that he has and is and does. Especially is this true as regards cha racter and conduct. Those with whom we mingle are constantly moulding us into mental and moral forms resembling their own, and no possible effort or determination on our part can prevent it. It is true that each individuality is separate and different from all others, but all are being insensibly modified by their associa - tions with each other. There are different degrees of this influence. Some persons are very susceptible. They take the form of every pressure as wax takes the form of the seal. Others are more original and less mobile ; yet, as even the rock cannot resist the constant action of the waves, neither can t...

JEWISH POPULATION OF THE UNITED STATES. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 August 1897

.JEWISH POPULATION OF THE UNITED STATES. ? A correspondent writes, in the Jewish Chro nicle, that Mr. Jacob Schiff, of New York, addressed the members of the Council of the Anglo-Jewish Association, and stated that of the 600,000 Jews in the United States, 350,000 - were in New York. There never having been ..a census of religions taken, the statement of Mr. Schiff must be largely conjectural The report, of the vice-president of the Hebrew Education Society stated that of the 1432 ad missions in the night schools, 598 of them . arrived at New York, hence all who arrive there do not remain. There are undoubtedly between 750,000 and 800,000 Jews in the -country. New York State has 300,000 of these, Pennsylvania about 80,000, Maryland has between 35,000 and 40,000, Chicago, Cin cinnati, St. Louis, Louisville, New Orleans, and all the other large cities have many Jewish residents, and there is scarcely a town or ham let in the United States where Jews — more especially Russian Jews — ar...

SERVICES IN THE GREAT SYNAGOGUE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 August 1897

SERVICES IN THE GREAT SYNAGOGUE. ' Steeped in loyalty to the lips.' Such was the description applied by the Chief Rabbi to the Jews of the metropolis at* a special service of prayer and thanksgiving held yesterday. The Lord Mayor and Sheriffs attended in full 'state, and the congregation, whilst ic represented practically the influential residents of the locality, numbered some of the most prominent members of the community. The Secretary of the Board of Management (Mr P Vincent) made arrangements for seating 1100, the ladies and gentlemen being shown to their seats by 100 stewards. Certain structural additions were expressly made for the occasion to accom modate the orchestra and a large choir. A stand was placed at the West, rising to the level of the gallery for the Lady Mayoress and other ladies of distinction In front of the Almemmar a dais was placed with two gilt chairs up holstered in terra- cotta, for Lord Rothschild, Warden, and on his right the Lord Mayor. The exterior of...

THE JEWISH YOUNG MEN'S ASSOCIATION. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 August 1897

THE JEWISH YOUNG MEN'S ASSO ' CIATION. The title of the proposed Society is evidently ^Misleading. We do not aim at a society for young men only — we mean to have the valuable aid of the ladies in our task. Most Jewish Societies catering for the young people of our community gradually drift into a very hum drum existence, on account of the want of effective scrutiny of the character and habits of its members. Therefore, it cannot be charged against the leaders of our community that they isolate themselves. They have every righteous and sensible excuse in their favor. Many complain of the ' frigid atmosphere or courtesy of all Jewish gatherings 1' There is much excuse for this also. The Jew has always been ready to extend the hand of wel come to a stranger, and Peace be unto you. — : D3^y DW has been the passport to many Jewish homes of the past. Abraham once entertained three strangers, and was surprised, when they were about to depart, to find out their celestial character. They ha...

LONDON NEWS. FUNERAL OF MR. B. I. BARNATO. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 August 1897

LONDON JNEWS. (From our Correspondent.) FUNERAL OF MR. B. I. BARNATO. After the inquest the mortal remains of Mr Barnett Isaac Barnato were removed from Southampton to Waterloo Station, and from thence to the residence of Mrs. Joel, of Marble Arch, sister of the deceased. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, and evoked a scene which bore tribute to the most lovable part of the character of the man whose sudden death affected temporarily nearly every course in Europe. Though a millionaire Mr. Barnato never forgot that he had sprung from the people, and whatever defects may exist amongst the population of Spitalfields, the place of his birth, and Whitechapel, where he was reared, the vice of ingratitude is certainly not amongst them. Those who expected to witness a scene of pomp and magnificence commensurate with ?with the wealth of the deceased were disap pointed, for the arrangements were of the simplest kind. The coffin — of plain varnished oak with' modest brass fittings— w...

SATURDAY AFTERNOON SERVICES. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 August 1897

SATURDAY AFTERNOON SERVICES. We were much surprised by the Juvenile writer of the following report, ( composed from memory) hand ing it in on Sunday morning, asking if it would be of any use. It shews that the work of the Rev. J. H. Landau is not lost, and further recognising that one volunteer is worth ten pressed men; we append the exact copy of the M.S.S. : — The attendance at the afternoon service held fortnightly by Rev. Mr. Landau was very bad ; there rwere only 26 children in attendance. The subject was ' Learning' of which we were told a story e£r In oldea times these Jewish people were very anxious to learn about their religion, so ikey there were several colleges in -Poland. aa4-ei: w&ek-ffiaay-peeple-atoidedT- There was a poor, young man named Rabbi Kever [Akavya] he wished very much to learn about his religion but he did not have enough money to buy bread ev^n, if he did he -would have spent it in learning. So there was a big college on which there was a glass ro...

- . ? . ? . ? . ? ^ The next social of the Almack Club takes place on .August 10. ?We anticipate an article on the ' Finances of Federation,' by one of the ablest writers in the move rment, for our next issue. The Hebrew Ladies' Dorcas Society met at the 'Vestry Rooms of the Great Synagogue on Monday last. The subscription list to this journal is quite a 'directory of the colony. We still add a number of names with every post. The Rev. I. M. Mr. Ernest Meyer's acceptance of the position of '.Honorary Secretary, has entailed a lot of worry, and we note that that gentleman has not shirked his responsibility to the Sabbath School.
