A Strange Story. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 13 January 1903

A Strange Story. Hkiu: is a strange story of the Bank of England. Wood Pulp and Newspapers. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 13 January 1903

Wood B'jiJj*. aaiel iV-!w$ii-ajit!i-»i. Lbr us consider how newspaper is made iu one of the greatest 'mills of the Adirondack JLountains,. where the giant machines, rattling 011, day after day, never stopping, are scarcely able to supply the demand of a single New York newspaper .(writes 'Success'). The timber, which is felled in the forests of the north in winter, is floated to the mill in the mountain streams by the spring freshets/' and piled up in great heaps about the mill buildings, whose many roofs, chim neys, and towers form a strange picture in tlie wilderness against the background of cloud-topped moun tains. By being fed to shrieking sinvs, tlie spruce logs aro cut into pieces that are no longer than a man's arm. ' Barking' machines, whi :h have discs of rapidly-whirling radial knives, attack the wood and tear off the baric. To prevent a waste'of any part of the timber, an endless chain conveyer carries the bark to the. boiler-room, where it is fed to the tires. Another i...

Encouragement of Swimming. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 13 January 1903

KncpiiragcurMit of .Swiiiimiiis. As a result ot the number of drowning fatalities during (lie lioiidajs, (lie Education Department iu Victoria is taking steps to encourage the forma tion of swimming classes among schools in the metropolis and along tlie sea coast. This is a more in tlie right; direction, aud the example should be followed in New South Wales, where swimming classes slioald be formed wherever the water neces sary can bo obtained. The number of deaths from drowning at holiday times is always great, and during the recent Christmas season tbc fatalities in all the States of Australia were so numer ous as to be alarming. Here on the Richmond it would be a simple matter to establish baths, and visitors duriujr the hot summer months express sur prise at the utter absence of accom modation for bathers. The matter of establishing baths was 'brought up in the Casino Council some years ago, but like numerous other proposals calculated to advance and benefit the town the subject...
