MR. JOHN MARTIN [Newspaper Article] — Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser — 19 January 1940

MR. JOHN MARTIN Mr. John Martin, father of Mrs. F. Hiatt, of Greeneborough, died in Genista private hospital on January 8 at 72 years of age. Mr. Martin was born at Yackandan- dah, Victoria, in 1868 and spent the greater part of his life there as store keeper. He married and reared a family of five, three of whom are still alive. His children were Winifred (Mrs. Hiatt) James (deceased), Mary. Eileen (dec.) and John. Seven years ago Mr. Martin went to live at Caulfield and came to Greensborough with his daughter last September when Mr. F. Hiatt was ap pointed headmaster of the Greens borough State School. However, Mr. Martin did not enjoy good health in recent years. He owas buried at St. Kilda Cemetery on Tuesday, January 9. The funeral was a large one, attended by numer ous old friends (the majority between 65 and 75 years of age) from Yackan-   dandah and Caulfield.

Queenstown CAR ACCIDENT Last Sunday morning whilst Miss Mabel Miller, of Queenstown was driving to church accompanied by her sister and sister's child, the car skid- ded and overturned in loose gravel at the foot of Olive's Hill, the car, a tourer, coming to rest with its four wheels in the air. Miss Miller was pinned by the wrist, but the other occupants crawled out unhurt from underneath. Passers-by lifted the car and extricated Miss Miller, and she was taken to a doctor, where it was found she had a broken bone in the wrist.

Diamond Creek FIRE IN WOODEN HOUSE Blind Man Rescued Dlemllers of the recently-formed Diamond Creek Bush Fire Brigade had their first experience of fire fight .ing this year when an old wooden house owned by Mr. Lawrence Ryan caught fire last Tuesday night at 7 o'clock. At about 7 p.m. on ''Tuesday the Searle children who. live within a few hundred yards of Mr. Ryan's saw smoke rising from the rear of. the hous; and raised the alarm. Withifi a few minutes about 15 members of the Bush Fire Brigade were on the scene. There they found part of the fireplace and a section of the kitchen wall burning. iMr. Ryan who is more than 8O years of age and almost totally blind, was found groping helplessly around the living room and trying to save a few valuables. Filling buckets from taps the fire fighters threw water over the flames and extinguished the blaze just as it was gaining a firm hold on the old timber. St. Andrews Youth , Shot In Shoulder An accident which narrowly missed being fatal occurred during, the Christmas holidays when a young visitor to the district was shot through the shoulder. Douglas Marchbank, of Clifton Hill -accompanied by Frederick Tyrrell and other friends wire on holidays at St. Andrews, and decided to go out shooting. When Marchbank was getting out of the car with the gun in his hand, it caught and exploded, the bullet passing through his right shoulder and- severing an artery. Mr. Harry Wood came to the as sistance of the party, and the injured •lar was taken to Melbourne 'where an operation was performed and the severed artery tied.
