The Tick Pest. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 6 January 1899

The Tick Pest, The discovery of ticks as far south us' Mary borough, Q,, the noarest point towards tho Now South Wales boundary so far readied, has dirooted tho attention of tho Agricultural and Stock Departments of this colony afresh to tho subject, but at a couferonco between Mr. Cook, Miuistor for Agriculture, and Mr, Bruce, Chief Inspontor of Stock, on Wednesday, it was agroqd that nothing further could be done, It is intended, how< over, to remind the public, and especially tlie stocli-ownor, of the successful results already uohiovod from inoculation. Inoculntion, of courBe, ia not compulsory, but tho virus is supplied by the Department with full directions for uho, and there is an ample supply on hand. In Victoria it has been n question whether shoep an well as horses carried tho tick about, and Queensland has apparently found that they do. Mr. Cook has, therefore, issued instructions prohibiting their introduction into the colony from tiok-infosted areas.

GRAIN, &C. A. McArthur and Co. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 6 January 1899

GRAIN, &C. A. McArthur and Co. Wheat : The Christmas ami New Year holi- j flays have int erfered t.o a very great extent with | operations in this line, untl there is really no i movement to report, sales being npon an ox- j tremely limited basis. Buyers and sellers are ; not agreed upon wluit is fair priee for the erop j now coming to hand, growers in many instances preferring to hold on to their stocks rather i than ftecept rates now current. Toward the j end of this month, no doubt, we will be able to report business of considerable magnitude, which will give a better idea of how values are likely to go later on. Wo quote at present prime milling, 2s 9d to 2s lOd, ex rail Darling Harbour, and liavo done fair business upon this basis. Chiokwheat has weakened somewhat, and whole-grained samples are now selling at from 2s 6d to 2s 7d; broken, 2s 2d to 2s -Id per bushel. Goldsbrough, Mort, and Co., Limited. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 6 January 1899

Goldsbrough, Mort, and Oo., Limited. Wheat 'values are oasier than when wo last wrote, but they are still above tho purity of Londou prices, and while we havo a largo ox. portable surplus in Australasia it is usnlosn for holders of wheat to look for an inorwsod .vuluo Ihtc before an advance in value is experienced at tho world'H centre. Undoubtedly it inupt seem hard to growers to realise that prices may H<) 1»>>vor than those nt. present obtainable ; but the present outlook Mould seem ID indicate that j a still further deolino will yet be experienced before bottom is touched. On the other hand it. is rejistfnable to suppose tliat higher values will rule beforo the coinpletion of the venr, Imi that is, of course, purely a matter o/ specula tion. Maize has advanced rnpidly in prico, anil to day holder* are asking as high as-lsa biiKhel. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Limited. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 6 January 1899

New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Limited. Willi the opnniny of the now year, business, cm the whole, lias ruled rather quiet. Tlu: wheat market continues to show an easier : tendency, in sympathy with the further weak ness of the Melbourne and Adelaide markets, and oil the spot prime quality wheat cannot now he quoted at over '2a 9d per bushel, millers I showing no eagerness to purchase at all freely. -Medium to good milling samples are difficult ! I o quit, eyen at reduced figures, while chick wheat is now in much heuvier .supply, and is 1 offering at decidedly lower figures, best whole u'rain .samples being quoted nominally to 2s 6d, fair samples being obtainable at lower figures. The Hour market, continues weak and unset tled, old local (lour being quoted at about .L'S, and beat now intercolonial and local to 1'7 l"s. Owing to the scarcity of prime corn ayailahle at the moment, quotations this week have advanced to from 3s Kid to -Is per bushel, some holders being very...

Harrison, Jones, and Devlin, Limited. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 6 January 1899

Harrison, Jones, and Devlin, Limited. Although it is nit her early to comment 011 business this year, it is moat gratifying to note a decidedly holler fooling in in any produce j lines. Whoat however, has exhibited more or less weakness, the low quotations from the southern colonics being responsible for this down-turn. Millers, though preferring to pur chase here, are unable to do so owing to present prices, and aro drawing a largo portion of their supplies from Vietoria. lToiv long New South Wales growers will hold oil" remains to be seen, hut if present conditions continue, it is evident that they must meet the market sooner or later. Vory little old wheut is held on the spot, hut as new wheal is giving every satisfaction, there is no demand for old grain unless oll'ered on the basis of the new crop. We are daily in receipt of inquiries as to storage, and the facilities oll'ered by us are giving general satisfaction. Intensification of interest, in the mai/.o market has been wit ...

Wheat: The market remains in a very, un settled and complicated condition, m^lers apparently experiencing some difficulty in making any sales of flour, owing to tho Victorian and Adelaide markets being so much In-low them, and the bakers, having stocks that will carry them for tho next month or two, are j very independent about purchasing, holding j I lie belief that they will do bet ter in the early future.
