PACKETS. ETC Preparation for Post. Packets may be sent thriugh the pos without a cover (but not fastened with anyt thing adhesive, such as gum, postage stamp, sealing wax, etc.); in a cover irely open at one end or side (if the be slit, the opening must be of the extent of the end or side, and the contents must be easy of withdrawal). The cover may bear the sender's name and address, and the words, "packet," "sample," or " pattern," etc., as the case may be, " only." Packets may be tied with string, but officers of the department may cut the string' to examine the contents, and tie the packet up again. Samples of seeds, drags, etc., which cannot be sent as open packets, may be 1 enclosed in bags or boxes, fastened so as to be easily undone and re-fastened. If ad dressed to places in the United Kingdom only, they may be sent in closed trans parent bags. MRS. MARY CARTER. . Still one more - of the earliest settlers of this district passed away last Sunday afternoon", in the person of Mrs Mary Carter, relict of ihe late Mr. Joseph Carter. The de cease i came to this distiict in 1875 with her husband, arid selected land in the parish of Barvvo, the farm then taken up is now the property of J. R. Bourke. The late Mrs. Carter came to this country ir, the fifties, and had many of the hard ships newcomeis had to undergo for want of Colonial experience, and added to this her home was twice burnt down. However she was made ot the right stuff, and success fully surmounted every difficulty. Thirteen children were born to her, eight of whom survive, viz.—Joseph (Warnambool), Richard (Carlton), William (N.S.W.), George (Broad ford), John (W.A.), Edwin B. (Oak leigh), and Mrs;. E. T.
