Rxcruits. — On Saturday noon a large detachment of raw recruits came over the Lebanon Valley route from _*ew York city, on their way to Uncle Sam's headquarters at Carlisle barracks. They left in the 2 o'clock train for that place. . The majority of them were stout, robust men, and seem well formed for military service; while others, we noted, will scarcely ever be able to endure the hardships of a soldier's life on our frontiers.

FRENCH WINES [Prom the London Saturday Review.] At present there are some twelve or thirteen thousand vineyard proprietors. The vinegrowing districts are divided into the Coteaux, the Graves and the Talus. The Cotenux are the mountain slopes, often so steep that they could be applied to no other purpose, and generally composed of marl, chalk and argillaceous substances, so badly mixed near the summit as- to offer very serious impediments to cultivation. The Gravesareplains of deluvian cultivation, consisting of sand, pebbles and gravel, intermixed as if by the rapid action of » current of water. The Palus are deep, fat soils, apparently the alow formed sediment of standing water, and the wines made m three show a remarkable fitness for transportation , and are sent in large quantities to India and America. Many of the communes have a European celebrity. The Medoc district lies between the Gironde river and the G nit of Gastony, and is devoted exclusively to the production of...

A Positive Witness.—It is of Warren, the author of "Ten Thousand a Year," that this sharp practice in the examination of a man accused of swearing falsely in a will case is related. It shows great dramatic power unconsciously exhibited in his daily business. The prisoner being arraigned, and the formalities gone through with, the prosecutor, placing bis thumb over the seal, held up the will, and demanded of the prisoner if he had seen the testator sign that instrument, to which he promptly answered he had.
