• Supplies of Hogs . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 3 January 1902

• Supplies of Hogs . BHE number of young hogs in the country was undoubtedly very large . Reports from many sections are to the effect that thrifty , healthy young shoats are very abundant . Three factors are rapidly shortening the available supplies : * First of all the high price of corn , second the cost of putting on pounds of meat in cold weather , and third the fact that prices are fairly good now , even for little pigs . ; However , with So to 125 lb . pigs selling in Chicago at $ 4 . 00 to $ 5 . 00 it looks as if feeders could ill afford to let them go . * Many good people think that a man might better pay 75 c per bushel for corn than to sell these thrifty , healthy , young shoats at such prices . • Eastern hog raisers have been busy the past year or so and that is why we are confronted with the surprising spectacle of hogs at eastern markets soiling for less than on the Chicago market . Michigan , Ohio and Indiana farmers are finding it quite profitable to send their stock...

Rm-oomJ-or Thought . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 3 January 1902

Rm-oomJ-or Thought . YJW--FERIMEXTS at the stations fre- | B | quently fail to receive credence at the hands of practical farmers simply because they hold the impression that the work is done under high-priced and unnatural conditions not practical on the average farm . During the past four months a representative of the Live Stock World has visited five of the principal experiment stations in the northwest and taken pains to ascertain conditions under which experimental crops have been raised . He found that no fertilizers save those available to jevery farmer were used , and that the methods pursued were practical in every respect . As experiment station crops are far heavier than the average of the state this furnishes food for thought by the farmer . Economy in handling manures , thorough cultivation , intelligent rotation and selection of seed appears to be the secret of large yields on the experiment station farm , and any farmer is in a position to -achieve the same results ....

Off in a 'Bunch . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 3 January 1902

Off in a Bunch . JIBES , we are all off in a bunch to a good U start . Some of us have been overtrained and will fall out of it , utterly • winded , not far from the get-away , and there will be a whole lot of us who have heen touted as good things who will be numbered among the also rans when the record is made up . Some of us will get bumped into the ropes early , some will pick out the bad going , then set up a claim that we have not been given a fair show . Some of us will get into the rucks anji not he able to get out . Some will burst a girth or corset string or something of that kind . Some will toss their jockey and go cantering off into the field to prance around and snort and not care what kind of a finish the bunch makes . Some will show a burst of speed during the first half that will astonish humanity and kick dust into the peepers of many a steady-going candidate , then tire and drop away back . But there are enough of us started to make a grand , enthusing sight when ...

: ^/ l Accessary Qualification . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 3 January 1902

: ^/ l Accessary Qualification . ¦ WANT farmers fail to close feeding oper- \_^__\ ations on the right side of the ledger because they are not good buyers . They are out of pocket from the day they secure their stock cattle . Every man in the business should be a good judge of stock . - ; At the recent convention of Iowa stockxuen Prof . Curtiss , of the state experimentstation , gave an object lesson on this topic . Two steers costing the same when bought as feeders were put in a- feed lot . Each consumed the same quantity of food during the feeding period and made practically the same gains , yet when sold at Chicago one brought 49 per cent more than the other . This , Prof . Curtiss declared , was not an accident . Buyers at the stock yards possess an education that should be shared by every man handling live stock .

Silage in the StocK . Country . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 3 January 1902

Silage in the StocK . Country . A PER AMBULATING member of the LIVESTOCK WORLD staff , while on a trip recently through tbe corn belt discovered considerable interest in tbe silage questionFeeders realize the need of some succulent article iof food , as tbe cultivation of roots involves considerable labor , silage seems to answer the purpose satisfactorily . List , summer s drouth is doubtless responsible for this interest , and if that disaster induces stock raisers to study the capabilities of forage plants the leston will not have proved costly . The LIVE STOCK WUKLD believes that a stave silo will be a profitable investment for every farmer , and its contents a blessing to tbe stock cn his place . Those contemplating putting np silage nest year will display wisdom by confining themselves to corn . It Is unquestionably the best forage crop and makes the best silage . At the Illinois , Iowa , Minnseota and South Dakota stations corn silage Is deemed invaluable . At South Dakota , ...
