Among the Horsemen [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 9 January 1896
Among the Horsemen SHOES WITHOUT NAILS . EVERY onoe in a while some iriventor (?) comes forward with a new arrangement to fasten on a horse s shoe without the use of nails or a shoe to take the place of the ordinary iron or steel shoe that has been so long in use . Of the shoes , some have rubber wearing surfaces to reduce the concussion , and some have other schemes . of a like nature . So far these have all been experiments , though many have been proved by trial to be of practical good . The chief obstacle to there introduction was the cost , which since there are no facilities for their manufacture , is necessarily greater than that of the nailed shoe . In many instances shoes which at first wear to perfection have after a time worked loose . To the Hong list ol nailles ® shoes there has iust come to our knowledge another , patented by an Auburn , New York , inventor . The system adopted in it is . that of a shoe proper and a removable wearing surface . The shoe proper consists ...

Farm , Garden and Orchard [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 9 January 1896
Farm , Garden and Orchard ^ EqONOMY WIT H FERTILIZERS , NOT only in this country , but also in Europe , the low price of farm products has * made it necessary for the tiller of the soil to use the utmost economy in all farm operations , in order to make both ends meet ; But economy in die wrong place is often a waste of money . In this connection it may be of interest to consumers of artificial fertilizers to learn the views and statements of PrivyCouncillor Maercker , Director of the Experiment Station at Halle , Germany . Prof . Maercker is perhaps , the highest living authority on agricultural questions , and his recent statement , which is based on carefully , prepared facts , should attract wide attention just at this time . He comments on the reduction in use of artificial fertilizers during the current year , owing to Uie low prices of farm products in all the markets , and he raises the question whether or not farmers have made matters worse for themselves , by not using suf...

Colony Items [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 9 January 1896
Colony Items - News comes over the wires of damaging irosts in Southern California , especially at Riverside where the oranges are frozen on the trees ! This is twice in three years this has happened . With the freeze of last winter which destroyed not only the crop but the trees also in Florida , this very materially narrows the area of safe orange land . On reading the despatches we immediately wired for news of any damage at Fair Oaks and received the following cheering dispatch from ( an extensive fruit shipper from this , the Warm Gold Belt : ; Lowest thermometer has registered this winter twenty-eight above . No damage , whatever . George D . Kellogg . . . A letter from Mr . Alsip also confirms the hews ; he says : * _ . ¦ The writer was at Orangevale and J ? air Oaks . yesterday , and finds that no damage whatever , was done to the fruit by the recent frost . We have had . some cold weather , but as stated no harm was done . The party we had out picked Tokay grapes from the v...

Book Review THE DIARYOF A JAPANESE CONVERT . By Kanzo Uchlmiurai With portrait , price $ 1 . 00 . New York : Chicago ; Toronto : Flemm ing H . Reveli Company . A BOOK instructive and interesting , first , / V as an evidence of the power of Christianity on the human heart and life , and second ; as proving its adaptation to elevate and save the so-called heathen races , however low they may have been sunk in superstition and degradation Here is the experience of one born in heathenism , of one of the races not counted equal to the AngloSaxon or any of the European races . And yet many of the members of our American churches might learn much in simple faith and piety , of true moral distinctions and of Christian philosophy from these honest records of a devoted lifef It is wonderful that this Japanese youtn has so complete a mastery of English . The entire work was written ih the language in which it is here published and is not a translation . In the sketch of his parents and grandpa...
