THE GRANGE . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 November 1906

THE GRANGE . - UNEQUAL TAXATION . By C . B . Kegley , State Master , Washington . I UEGB every grange in this state to take up the study of taxation in all its phases earnestly and seriously during the coming year , for I feel very strongly that we farmers have hardly realized the tremendous importance of thoroughly understanding the fundamental principles of taxation . We have an immense variety of taxes , national , state and local , and lately I have come to realize that we are the victims of oppressive forms of taxation from which the people get absolutely no benefit and which operates for the benefit of monopoly . We permit the federal government , for example , to impose a heavy tax on distilled spirits , thinking it is only whisky or other beverage spirits that we are taxing , and after long years we awake to a realization of the fact that through the tax we have been giving to the Standard Oil Company a monopoly on the liquid fuel supply , and have not only thereby compelled...

WAIFS TWO THANKSGIVINa DAYS . HELEN was standing by the dresser in the kitchen on Thanksgiving morning impatiently waiting to see what her part was to be in the stuffing of the big turkey of which she had been so afraid all summer , for her mother had promised her that she shoujd help prepare him for the oven . Doesnt it seem funny to see him without his feathers and know that he cant gobble any more . she cried . Yes , you will be gobbling him in a few hours , replied big sister Fannie . Helen laughed and patted the turkey s fat sides . I m not afraid of you now , she said . But what am I to do , mother . she added . You may pick this dried sage off the stems . It is for tlie dressing , you know , and see that you are very careful not to scatter any of it on the floor . Home and . Fireside [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 November 1906

Home and . Fireside THE THANKSGIVING DINNER . By Irene Hamilton . NJSXT to the Fourth of July , the most appreciated holiday in the United States is Thanksgiving Day . The true spirit of thanksgiving is developed in the New England States better than anywhere else , but New Englanders are in every State of the Union , and they haye carried the oldtime sentiment with them . A good dinner on Thanksgiving Day is looked forward to by every member of the family , but there are ways of showing otir thankfulness and appreciation besides eating and drinking . Good reading , cheerful conversation , and good homely sociability are of more importance than what we have to eat , but , of course , we all expect some of the New England dishes , such as mince and pumpkin pies , doughnuts , plum pudding , pickles , fruit and coffee . Some of us this year will not be fortunate enough to have roast turkey , but spare ribs or a good roast of pig pork is good _ enough for any good royal American citizen...
