W . S . Corsa Buys Carnot for $ 10 , 000 . 00 . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910

W . S . Corsa Buys Carnot for $ 10 , 000 . 00 . The Breeder s Gazette is universally conceded to be one of the greatest live stock authorities on either continent and we cannot better give our own appreciation of Carnot than by quoting verbatim from a recent issue of the Breeders Gazette : The topmost price ever paid for a Percheron stallion was the $ 10 , 000 given by W . S . Corsa , White Hall , 111 ., to J . Crouch & Son , Lafayette , Ind ., for the champion Percheron stallion , Carnot . The purchase was made just before Carnot won the championship at the International last week . The publication of such long prices for horses sometimes awakens suspicion as to trades or drawbacks . There need be no suspicion of that sort on this occasion . Mr . Corsa paid $ 10 , 000 for Carnot . He paid it because he could not buy the horse for any less money , and because he was determined to have him . Having once sold a Berkshire boar for $ 5 , 000 , the price double that price did...

A Son of Lord Premier s Rival for $ 125 . 00 . S . S . Ormsby , Anchorage , Ky ., one of the good breeders of his state and a man of excellent judgment and qualities , offers his outstanding herd boar , Rival s Choice 107583 , for sale at the extremely low price of $ 125 . 00 . Mr . Ormsby writes that as all of his sows are now safely bred for spring farrow that he has concluded to offer this great breeding boar at a price that should find a quick buyer . He also states that Rivals Choice is an excellent breeder and recommends him highly to any Berkshire breeder who can use an extra good boar of this breeding . Rival s Choice is a son of Lord Premier s Rival and the great brood sow Oneida , making him a full brother of Premier Victor , Grand Champion at St . Joseph in 1907 and first in class at Springfield the same year ; also the great prize winning pigs Victor Premier and Premier Victor 2 d , both State Fair winners . Two of his sisters were State Fair winners and this is certainl...

Hog Notes -By a Practical Hog Man ^ Continued from Page 8 . ) [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910

Hog Notes -By a Practical Hog Man ^ Continued from Page 8 . ) feed and have all she will clean up . If any change Is made in the feed it should be made gradually . Right here hinges the danger : sudden changes in the feed derange the system and often cause scours and a set back to the young pigs . A spoonful of sulphur in the feed will generally stop the scours if given on the first indication of scours . To get the most out of the young crop of pigs they must be kept growing as rapidly as possible on the best of feed . When the young pigs show inclination to begin to eat with their mother it is time to prepare a side table so to speak by having a place on a dry platform so arranged that the little fellows may go in and out at will and cannot be molested by the sow or any other pigs . They should have a very low shallow trough and should be fed some of the same feed that is given the sow and in addition they may have a little shelled corn scattered on the platform . There is nothing...

DAIRY NOTES . The feed that produces milk does not produce fat . Wasted butter-fat is a serious loss and cuts into the profits unmercifully . The use to which the farmer puts his skimmed milk is a large factor in determining the profits of the dairy . The separator cuts down the cost of delivery thereby increasing the profit . The separator is a clarifier of the milk but it cannot take the place of careful methods in producing and straining . It pays to strip the cows , A recent experiment showed that the strippings are unquestionably the most valuable part of the milk . Further than this , the cow that is not stripped does not hold up as well in her milk flow . It is a shame to ask a cow to make milk and butter-fat without proper feed . The vicious cow is always disliked but nine times out of ten she is the result of careless handling . Dairying takes less fertility out of the soil than any other form of agriculture , ^ jj The by-products of the cow , skimmed milk and butter milk ,...
