THE BOftK TRCAyP ATTOTTB THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 1889. .j THE DAILY VRGUS J N4 OTTR. Thursday. January 81. IHM). About every republican congressman that was defeated at the last election is a candidate for office under Ilarrison . Re pnblioans never willingly retire to private life. They seem to think that the United States government owes them a living. Ix the Baker and Forman contest for a seat in congress, Forman makes gains. In St. Clair county Baker claimed great frauds, but the recount of the vote of that county was finished last night and Forman made a gain of four votes. Baker ought to have kept out of a con test. He has lout many friends by bis conduct. The democrats who did vote for him are now satisfied thai they ought to have voted for their own candidate for ha has proven himself the better man Baker seems to want to go to congress, whether elected or not. Col. C. J. McRPnT will shortly visit the west in the interest of the proposed special corn exhibit at the coming Pari...

The Port Byron Globt of yesterday bad the following suggestions which are worth reading at least: Speaking of the bridge business, would it not be a good plan for Rock Island to change the location of her Rock river bridges from below to a considerable dis tance above the dams, whpre the peril of annual destruction might be wholly averted? For instance: Open Twentieth street through to Rock river, and from the point where this rosd would strike the river build a high bridge. J. u J 5 -1 'A : i .1 the Daily rgus JOHN W. POTT El Tuesday, Febkubt 5, 1889. Thi charity ball being an Invitation affair, it waa not tho intention of the la dies to attempt to diapose of tickets by personal solicitation, rather depending upon the generosity of the public to give it a good substantial support But there being so many who might not oare to at tend the bail, and who at the same time desire to assist the charitable enterprise. a few of the ladies yesterday took a lim ited number of tickets and volunteered to dispose of tbetn. It is unnecessary to say that they met with a liberal and hearty response from the merchants. While this method may not be especially agreeable or pleasant, it is certainly at tended with the most satisfactory results. and in this case the end certainly justl fles the means.
