A TpE IflDEpEMDEHT. SATURDAY, JUNE 1, 1895, Observations. The government is really to be congratulated on its enterprise push and economy The workmanship displayed in the erection of a wall around the pumping plant defies descrip tion. The amount of bricks daily laid by Mr. Howell's 'men would puzzle an arithmetician. It is rumored that the wall is to bo the size of the Eiffel tower. If so we will suggest to the great superintendent to put on one more workingman. If not we fear lie won't bo around when the wall is finished. ' David Starr Jordan is tho first Presidont of the Leland Staiifprd Junior University of eminence and a recognized educator. Presidont Jordan contributed to the Forum for May an article entitled "Pet- tifogging Law Schools and an Untrained Bar." Tho whole article is too long for these columns, so we make pertinent extracts, as follows: "But with all this, the professional school of America, have not taken their part, in the University development. ?KJjh & TpE . IjlDEpEHDEHll? m MONDAY, JUNE 8, 1895 Therk has been no band music at the baseball matches n as yet this season. Why not introduce the U. S. flagship Philadelphia's band while that ship remains in port ? It would bo almost certain 'to increase the audiences. Passknoers on the steamers trading betwoon the islands often remark upon bad treatment they observe cattlo receiving in the landing and transporting of them. It is no trifling matter "to ship the cat tle through the surf over a rocky bottom, with the boatmen often required to plungo into the wator. Yet it is said that the cattle are often left too long ponned without water, as well as being driven sometimes without sufficient regard for mercy. News came by Saturday's steamer that the London Chamber of Commerce had petitioned Paliament' to grant a subsidy of seventy-five pounds (about $375,000) to the projected fast Atlantic service in connection with tho Canadian - Australian mail route. It is understood . that...

TpE DEpEMDEHT. TUESDAY, JUNE 4. 180d Sauce for the Gander. In treating the matter of the occupation of Corinto by tho British forces, the N. Y. Tribune of April 28th becomes virtuously indignant, and roars as follows: " England has no right in law and morals to occupy foreign territory, to exer cise sovereignty, and to1 seize rovenues in payment of an indemnity levied ex parto on the 'stand and deliver' principle. Because England does this thing, and President Cleveland tolerates and sanctions it, these caviling censors may be reconciled to it temporarily as one qf tho necessary details of im perial policy, but what a rub a dub of abuse there would bo if the American -navy wero in that way." Does the Tribune forget that in January, 1893, the United States Minister, John L. Stevens, of unhappy memory, sent to these shores by President Harrison with a message of peace and good-will to Queen Liljuolcalani and her people, conspired with the present junta in power here for the overthrow ...

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5, 1895 'The Japanese in Hawaii v The Qovornmont organ has latoly been quito excited in its oxortion to show that tho in Hawaii qro not a not qvon an important factor in tho political situation.
