' , The rebeli wko were so bold tnd defi ant, overruning Maryland and threaten ingthe bordera of Pennsylvania two weeks since, have been obliged to retreat, ' skee daddling" and beaten, to their dens in Vir ginia. On the 14th inst. our forces en gaged them in a gorge of the South Moun tains between the towns of Middleton and Boonesboro, southeast from Hagerstown, Md. The battle lasted through a part of a day and night and resulted in a thorough scattering and defeat of the rebel army, with a loss on their part of 15,000 killed, wounded and missing, and between 1,209 and 1 ,500 taken prisoners ; with a loss on our part of about 3,000 ; we also lost one of our best and bravest men, Gen.
