Baby Ida In the mellow, ripe October, Where the leaves were being browned, And a heavy, dreary curtain Shadowed all the woods around 1 Then our darling baby, Ida, V ; With her dark blue loving eycSy Came to us a gentle angel, ' "Wandering from the starry skies. She's a dainty winsome creature, With her soft and silken hair Straying 'round her lovely forehead, " As the snowy lily fair. ' " Dimpled hands of tiny pattern ; " Her Toice, music soft and low, And 'neath her broidered wrappings ' " Peeps anon a pink white toe. - Rosy lips put up so pouting - As if asking for a kiss; She's the rose leaf of tradition- Laid upon our cup of bliss. " Eow quietly she came stealing, Nestling in each waiting heart. Folding there, her little ringlets. Knowing she had there a part. God help us to watch o'er her, Our jewel from Him given ; That when her earthly mission's over, ' r She may wander back to Heaven. Triumphs or Labor. Condudtd from Id pays. ! I would call your attention to the construction of the Pacific Railroad. Time and reflection have but served to confirm me in the truth and justice of the observations which- Jr made on this subject fn ray last annual message, to which r beg leave respectfully to refer. It is freely admitted that it would be expedient for this government to exercise- the power of constructing the Pacific Railroad by its own immediate agents. Such a policy would increase the-patronage of the executive to a dan gerous extcntand introduce a system of . V V ! t i i ; juuumg ana corruption wnicn no vigi lance on the part of federal officials could either prevent or detect.. This can only be done by the keen eye,and active and careful supervision, of individual and private interest. The construction of this road ought, therefore, to bo com mitted to companies incorporated by the States, or other agencies whose pe cuniary interests would be directly in volved. Congress might then a...
