EXTRACTS FROM LETTERS WHITTEN FROM ROME DURING THE YEARS 18 4—. NUMBER VI. After having visited the rooms of St. Ignatius mentioned in my last, on the same afternoon I visited the Church of St. Peter ad vincula , it being the eve of the festival of St. Peter’s chains. This is one of the oldest churches in Rome, it having lieen founded in the year 442 by Eudoxia, wife of the fcmperor Valentinian, during the pontificate of Loo the great. The design of its erection was to preserve therein the chains with which St. Peter was fettered in the prison at Jerusalem. Hence its name. A portion of these chains is still preserved in this church—most clearly traced to the fifth century, when it was publicly venerated as the identical chain that confined St. Peter in prison at Jerusalem at the time that he was miraculously liberated by an angel. THE CHURCH. The White Female Sodality of St. Matthew’s Church, Washington, D. C., on the 4th inst. presented to their directors, Mr. Phillip Ennis, and Dr. Phillip Smith, two beautiful silver goblets, us new year’s presents. The Rev. J. P. Donnelan delivered an address on the occasion which was responded to by Mr. Ennis. A beautiful church has been erected at Rocky Comfort, Ark. The Rev. Mr. Donahoe has been appointed to that mission, and entered on his duties on Christmas day. Rev. Mr. Monoghan has been ordained in the chapel of the Annunciation, at Little Rock, in the same State. In Bertrand, Mich., at Vespers, on Christmas day, three young ladies, Miss Margaret Gleason, from Chicago, Miss Mary Mclntire, from St. Louis, and Miss Coffee, from Fort Wayne, la., took the habit of Sisters of the Blessed Virgin of the Holy Cross from the hands of Rev. The Whigs, its seems, are disposed to do the honorable in the case of Mr. Woodward ; all, or nearly all the Whig Senators being determined to oppose his confirmation ; so that the Supreme Court stands a chance of being saved from lunar influence yet. , A canal has been cut through the reef between the mouth of the Neuces, and the bay of Corpus Christi : vessels drawing three feet water can pass. New Orleans has had a lawsuit with Uncle Sam about the ground on which the custom-house stands in that city. The city has won : it is worth more than half a million of dollars. One of the elephants of the Zoological Association wintering at Zenesville, died lately ; valued ut $6,500. The President has nominated for deputy post-master, at Lowell, a Mr. Leavy. Brighham Young, they say, lives in the third story of his Temple at Nauvoo, like another Robinson Crusoe, going up from the outside by a ladder, which he takes in after him every night. THE MORAL POSITION OF POPERY. We recommend to the serious attention of our no-popery cotemporaries the following paragraph, from a respectable Whig paper. We advise them to reflect how contemptible is their position, how small is their moral influence, and how little importance is attached to thetr rabid invectives against the head of the Catholic Church. It forms a pretty good set off to Judge Woodbury’s famous argument for annexation. “The Pope of Rome. The policy of arbitration should be forced upon our government, by the public voice. It is certain to give all that belongs to us, with honor, and without the dreadful and uncertain results of a war. There can be no difficulty in finding an impartial umpire. The Pope of Rome for instance, has no interests to bias him in favor of Great Britain, or against this country. He is a person of superior abilities, intelligence, and personal character, and is surrounded by official advisors of a similar stamp. The United States might entrust...

AN ARRIVAL AT NEW YORK. Highly important—resignation of the Peel Ministry, §'C. &lt;§’C. The ship Liberty arrived at New York on Sunday, bringing dates to the 18th of December. She brings the news of the resignation ot the Peel Ministry, the organization of anew Cabinet by Lord John Russell, and the probable repeal of the corn laws. The queen had prorogued the meeting of Parliament from Dec. 16 to Dec. 30. From the London Post, Dec. 12. On Wednesday last, at the council that assembled at Osborne House, Sir Robert Peel and every member of his cabinet tendered the resignation of their respective offices, and these resignations her majesty was graciously pleased to accept. The queen has since entrusted to Lord John Russell the duty of forming anew cabinet. Mr. James McDeavitt of this place has recently purchased a good assortment of Catholic books, which he will dispose of to our down East friends, on reasonable terms. t Cahoes, N. Y. Our Agent here, Mr. Donavan, is working well for us. There are a fine class of our countrymen in this place, a great many of whom take the Pilot. A man who keeps an intelligence office in this city recently addressed a letter to us, in which he spells the word items thus wise— llemtems. The schoolmaster is evidently wanted in his quarter of the city. “J. B.” We insert elsewhere a communication under this signature, on the present aspect of affairs in the Church. The writer is adistinguished clergyman, of the Maynooth school. Items. The London Morning Chronicle has' sent a reporter to this country to report for that paper the proceedings bf Congress. The express which left this city for New New York with the Hibernia’s news, for the associate presses (the Journal of Commerce, Tribune, Courier, Express and True Sun,) reached that city at 10 o’clock on Friday evening. The Herald express did not arrive until 5 o’clock the next morning, owing to its detention on the Norwich road. When the Hibernia came up the harbor on Friday morning, she appeared like an immense iceberg, so completely wa« she encrusted with ice. Ship Lotus of Salem, lying in James River, bound to Amsterdam, with 390hh&lt;ls tobacco, and 500 barrels of ilour onboard, was burnt with her cargo on the night of the 19th inst. The vessel was insured in Salem—the cargo in New York and Amsterdam.
