PASSIVITY The second characteristic of mystical prayer is its passivity. We must not confuse this with quietism, a 17th century false teaching that encouraged the giving up of one's entire will in complete vacuity. The mystic receives from God's activity;is totally and actively receptivity. What passivity refers to is the self-centered activity in the intellect and emotions. We all understand this long-suffering toward the other who assumes the center of our self-giving. It is a loss of power, a collapse of anything we would want to plan. The mystic realizes in letting go under God's activity that there is nothing he/she can do to achieve a oneness with God. It all depends upon God to be understood and grasp by them when, how and by whom He wishes. UNITY WITH GOD The third characteristic of true mystical experience is the direct, immediate oneness with God. The distance separating God from the individual "ego" is suddenly spanned. The two seemingly become one as God claims the mystic and unites Himself intimately with him/her. "How good Yahweh isonly taste and see!" (Ps 34:8). This touch of God unites Him with the mystic and the experience is described by the Psalmist as an experience that is sweet as to the sense of taste and beautiful to behold as to the eyes. The Christian is possessed by God as love. There is a blending of two into a oneness. It is a taste of a spiritual marriage where the individual Christian is possessed by her ravishing and ravished Bridegroom,Christ.

These include what can often happen to the mystic,such as visions,levitations,voices and other such psycho-physical happenings. A FREEING POVERTY As He lived,so He taught others to live also. Those actually living poorly were more open to receive God as sovereign than the rich and secure. He lived close to poverty and human miseries on the physical and spiritual levels. Yet He sought to alleviate such poverty and misery in every form. There is no intrinsic value in doing without God's created gifts. There is value in being free so as to be ready to accept God. Ultimately Jesus shows His holiness in poverty by being detached and unpossessive from successful responses to His loving service. A LOVING,SERVING POVERTY Jesus serves by not only preaching about the Father's love but also by acting out this love. Throughout His whole public life,Jesus went about doing good,especially in the form of healing all types of sicknesses and diseases. He is never more the perfect image of the Heavenly Father than when He saw the multitudes fainting and being scattered abroad as sheep without a shepherd and He was moved with mercy and compassion (Mt 9:36). A SILENCED HEART If we are to measure our holiness or our life in Christ by our love for God and neighbor,we soon experience that such constant love in self-giving cannot happen in our lives unless we learn to surrender to the inner operations of the triune God dwelling within us. To meet God profoundly within the depths of our hearts we must learn to silence our hearts. God calls to us: "Be still and know that I am God" (Ps 46:10).
