The Public Services Committee met-'a representative- of the Post and Telegraph Department re the delivery of mail at Field Street, and after discussion, the Depart- ment agreed to mail delivery in ,that district. The 'Buildings and By-Laws Committee recommended that !n future all Septic Tanks in the Borough be according to plans and specifications laid down by the Health Department. , The members of the Fire Pre- ventions Committee met the mem- bors of the Upper Hutt Fire Bri- gade in conference recently to discuss' matters relative to the benefit of the Brigade. Superintendent Wakelin stated that the Brigade did not intend to go out to fires in the Hutt County unless fire plugs were put vi at certain points. Mr. J. Improvements carried out to the council's .well at Trentham have been . successful, according to. a report by an engineer on the" operation of a second pump recently installed at the well. . Councillors at' the last meet- i,ng were of the opinion that the. deepening of the well had met with all the success hoped for. ./ The report, staf-ed -that the council well was 34ft 3in and contain- ed i2ft of water. The racing club's well in the vicinity, which was 32ft 6in ; deep, iWjith a water depth of 14ft, was sunk from a point five feet below the ground level at the council's well. Hence taking the ground level at the council's well as a reference point, the.bottom of the council: well was 34ft Sin deep, and the racecourse, '•.well ; 3 7ft 6in. Mr.. K. G-unji, • C.onsul-General. for Japan, handed to Major J: R. Kirk,. M.8.E., of Te Maru, Upper Hutt,. on Monday, the award for- warded iov him ;by the Kokusii Bunka' ■ Shinkokai ■'. (Japanese Cultural Society) of Tokio.. In 1937, the. Japanese Cultural Society invited papers from the subject of friendly relations/ be- tween Australia and Japan,, arid the paper of Major Kirk, received "the award of\the 'Society's gold medal for that year; the medal being the gift of Prince Konoye, then Prime Minister of Japan. An embargo on the export -of gold prevented, the authorities from sending the gold, medal, ;but sever- al volumes of works . dealing with Japanese subjects were dispatch- ed direct to Major Kirk. Now the award has .b-en completed by the reception ; of; the . Society's certificate, and a beautiful and costly piece of: Japanese art in the form of a choice cloisonne (in Japan known :as :shippo) vase. :
