3 Fire Proof Wood, [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Transcript — 18 June 1850

3 Fire Proof Wood, though exposed to the greatest force of the fire. Payneized lumber is thus prepared. The lunibar is placed in a perfectly i air-tight chamber; the air is exhausted therefrom by filling the chamber with steam, and then condensing by injecting- some of the solution of the sulphuret of bariurp or celcium; when a partial vacuum has been obtained, the solution is allowed to run in; then the same solution injected by a powerful force-pump, till the pressure becomes about 120 lbs. to the square inch. This pressure is maintained one hour, and the solution then drawn off, after which a solution of the sulphate of iron, "green vitrol," must be injected into the chamber. In the same 'manner, the acid of the last solution decomposes the sulphuret of the fh>t solution, and sulphur is evolved, while the earthy portion of the barium or calcium used, as also the mrtalic portion of the iron, of the green vitriol, unite in the pores of the wood and .'render it incombusti...
