Page 6 v^7 11] flf & Southwest Chinese Journal January 1-15, 1982 JUNE DOVE LEONG'S Message The following is a timely account of the Chinese New Year. According to the Lunar Calendar, Chinese New Year's Day, 1982 will herald in Year 4680 , the Year of the Dog. Chinese years come in cycles of 12. The Year of the Rat, for instance, last came in 1972, and it will turn up again in 1984, 1996 and so on. Next is the Ox (1973), the Tiger (1974), the Hare (1975), Dragon (1976), Snake (1977), Horse (1978), Ram (1979), Monkey (1980), Rooster (1981), Dog (1982), and Boar (1983). The clock is similarly divided by the Chinese. From midnight to 2 A.M. is the Hour of the Rat, from 2 to 4 A.M. is the Hour of the Ox, and so on around the clock. In which year were you born? It is interesting to note that Chinese astrologers foretold events by predilection, by the relative positions of the planets, and signs of the Chinese zodiac. If you were born in the Year of the Dog, (1898, 1910, 1922, 1934, 1...

I can't help but compare the similarities between drama and real life. In a drama there are roles assigned to the various actors. One can tell a good actor by how well he or she conforms to the role. Sometimes, we find flaws in casting: an actor is cast in a role which is incompatible with his/ her personal characteristics. In our everyday life, there are many roles with which each of us is cast. Society sits like an audience of spectators who judge the individuals by how well he/she plays the role. People drift into their roles partly by choice, as in our jobs, ...

Funded by a $45,000 grant from the Women's Educational Equity program of the Depart- ment of Education, the pro- ject will examine the lives, struggles and achievements of Chinese women in America from 1848 to 1982. With the Chinese Culture Foundation serving as spon- sor, the researchers will focus on the historical, racial and social inequali- ties these women have suf- fered, trace their contri- butions in order to promote positive role models, and dispel prevailing stereotypes which hinder personal devel- opment. The researchers, who were involved in the successful 1980 "Chinese of American 1785-1980" exhibition in San Francisco, are presently gathering research materials- interviews, archives, docu- ments, journals- on both the East and West coasts. V; by William Oer Bing Mrs. Joyce Fan, Ph.D. There are few if any, accomplish- ments of this seemingly indefatigable lady that her friends and acquaintances among the religious, academic and social communities do not already know. Let's recap just a few. Dr. Joyce Fan is the wife of Dr. Paul Fan, himself an esteemed educator who has retired from professorship at the University of Houston and is widely sought as a geo- logical consultant. They have two outstanding sons; Leland is an administrative, teaching and practicing physician. Laurence is in Baylor Medical School. The two Drs. Fan were the first couple married by the then very young "and very nervous" Reverend Billy Graham. Dr. Fan endured many hardships, deprivations and struggles as she was going through college at Wheaton, Illinois. But somehow, the teachings of her missionary father and the strength of her mother toughened her spi...
